Syracuse Basketball is in need of another point guard for next year. Frank Howard is the only true point guard coming back. Inside the Loud House looks at a Top 100 point guard recruit who just hit the open market.

The Syracuse basketball squad continues to court point guards in next year’s class. Jeff Borzello, an ESPN recruiting analyst, sent out a tweet on Monday that ACC heavyweights Duke and Syracuse are interested in Tremont Waters:

The 5’11 Waters, from Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Connecticut, had committed to Georgetown last October. He signed a letter of intent the month after.

Waters selected the Hoyas over several college basketball giants. The list of schools included Connecticut, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, and Kentucky according to 247Sports.

However, this past weekend, multiple reports came out that the four star point guard has asked Georgetown to release him from his commitment.

Player Ranks:

Waters is generally categorized in the top 100 across the country at his position, according to various recruiting Web sites. Overall, he ranks 52nd nationally by 247Sports.com. Waters is also 33rd in the ESPN 100, while Scout.com slots him at 35th.

Background and His Connection to SU:

Last year, he suited up for the South Kent School in South Kent, Connecticut. To those who recognize the school, it’s where present Orange redshirt freshman Matthew Moyer played. Let’s hope that Moyer is already in Waters’ ear about heading to Central New York for Head Coach Jim Boeheim’s final season at the helm. Ironically,  ‘Cuse Nation Sports thought the same thing:

Why Syracuse wants (and Needs) to land Tremont Waters

With starting point guard John Gillon, a graduate transfer, exhausting his eligibility, the sole lead guard on the Syracuse’s 2017 roster is sophomore Frank Howard. Freshman combo guard Tyus Battle, assuming he doesn’t leave the team, would be the other guard on the roster.

As such, SU clearly needs to nab a guard or two in the 2017 class. Just a few days ago, to that end, Syracuse offered a scholarship to combo guard Howard Washington.

More from basketball recruiting

Washington is from Athlete Institute Prep in Mono, Ontario.  Its also the home of four star forward Oshae Brissett: a 2017 Orange commit. Depending on the recruiting service, Washington is listed as either a 3-4 star prospect.

What’s more, 2018 four star point guard Eric Ayala has received an offer from the ‘Cuse. He’s even considering reclassifying to 2017, according to Nunesmagician.com.

I imagine the competition for Waters will prove fierce. Not helping matters is that SU has not fared well with other top-flight targets in the 2017 class. Still, it’s encouraging that the Orange remains active with recruits for next year.

If we could somehow land either Ayala or Waters, and Washington, that would probably bolster the outlook for Boeheim’s swan song.
