Syracuse.com’s Bud Poliquin is retiring from Advance Media New York later this month. He’s been a staple of CNY sports coverage for nearly the last four decades.

Syracuse.com broke the news earlier this afternoon. CNY Sports Columnist, Bud Poliquin, is stepping down after over 36 years in Syracuse.

This may seem odd or strange to cover on Inside the Loud House, but for my day job, I work at ESPN Radio in Syracuse. I’ve been working with Bud Poliquin for the last year and a half.

I’ve gotten to know the labeled: curmudgeon, grouchy, old man shaking his fist at the sea behind the scenes. Every Sunday morning I use to read his diatribes about the NFL season and who he was picking so I could pick the opposite.

The narrative says that Bud Poliquin is a “hater” or a “negative Nancy”. Bud does spit out the facts, he’s a matter-of-fact guy. While he certainly has his colorful opinion that has dazzled readers for decades, he doesn’t often let emotion get involved with his stories.

I love that he’s different. There’s a poetry to his writing, you know it when you see it. When some columnists say a basket goes in. Bud describes poetry in motion. The swish of the net, the sweat

Which is what has bothered readers I’m sure like when he talked about this current run the Syracuse basketball program has been on. This is factual. During the time frame that Bud suggested, SU hasn’t lost as many games in this stretch since the 1960’s.

The man behind the pen is actually a passionate individual who loves nature, theater, and movies alike. After you get past the gruff exterior, he’s a real softie.

While you may have not liked everything he did, nor agree with many of his opinions, what you did

do was provide a man a job. A job mind you that Bud has self admitted that he hasn’t worked a day in his life, because he enjoys it. Writing and talking about sports is personally for me the best job in the world and Bud has concurred with me.

He’s had such a profound impact on me that goes beyond sports.

Currently during the, Bud and the Manchild show I’m required to expand my horizons by watching movies I would’ve never seen on my own. It’s been a delight, I suggest that readers of his work, whether you loved it or you hated it, broaden your horizons and appreciate what this man has done for this community.

Bud has inspired debates, opinions, and forward thinking. It’s been a pleasure to work with him for the last year and a half and I’m looking forward to hanging out with him in and outside the studio. Best of luck on your retirement ventures Mr. Bud Poliquin, there’ll never be another like you.
