Malachi Davis, a talented edge who at one time was verbally committed to Syracuse football, says on social media that he plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens in early January.

The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Davis is a redshirt junior at Mid-American Conference member Toledo and will have one season of collegiate eligibility remaining. Davis was one of the top pass rushers for Toledo in the 2025 season, and the Rockets have put forth one of the top defenses around the country this term.

Toledo (8-4 overall) will face fellow Atlantic Coast Conference school Louisville in the Bush's Boca Raton Bowl on December 23 in Boca Raton, Fla.

By the way, not too long ago, SU Athletics announced that Syracuse football was hiring Toledo defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Vince Kehres as the Orange's new defensive coordinator. Might Davis follow Kehres to the Hill? That remains to be seen.

Former Syracuse football pledge Malachi Davis plans to enter the transfer portal.

The transfer portal in Division I football will be open from January 2 to January 16. Davis hails from Holt, Mich. During the 2025 campaign for Toledo, Davis tallied 19 solo tackles, 36 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, eight quarterback hurries and one pass breakup.

The Orange, under former head coach Dino Babers, offered a scholarship to Davis on February 13, 2021. He verbally committed to the 'Cuse a month later, on March 26.

On October 1, 2021, Davis de-committed from the 'Cuse, saying in media reports that he wanted to play college football closer to home. He pledged to Toledo the same day.

Davis was a three-star prospect in the 2022 class out of Holt Senior High School. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite, within this cycle, placed him at No. 1,385 overall, No. 165 at defensive lineman and No. 39 in Michigan. According to his bio on the Toledo athletics department Web site, as a senior at Holt, Davis collected 49 total tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

I'll certainly monitor if Syracuse football coaches pursue Davis once he enters the transfer portal in early January.
