Syracuse Orange News: Kyle McCord in Davey O'Brien QB Class, ACC teams in hoops poll

In this latest installment of Syracuse Orange sports news, we kick things off with Syracuse football senior quarterback Kyle McCord.
McCord, a four-star transfer from Ohio State and former five-star prep recruit, had a rough outing last Thursday. night when the 'Cuse fell at top-20 Pittsburgh. Still, he's having a pretty strong 2024 season to date.
This week, McCord was named to the 2024 Davey O'Brien Award Quarterback Class. He is one of 35 candidates for this prestigious award, which honors the nation's top signal-caller every year. The next step for this award is to name 16 semifinalists, and Syracuse football fans can get involved by voting.
As the Orange (5-2, 2-2 in the ACC) prepares to host Virginia Tech this Saturday afternoon, McCord has thrown for at least 300 yards in every game this season. In total, he's completing 63.6 percent of his attempts for 2,481 yards and 19 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.

Syracuse basketball will face several preseason top-25 teams
The Orange will officially commence its 2024-25 season on Monday, Nov. 4, when the 'Cuse will host nearby Le Moyne at the JMA Wireless Dome. Not too long ago, the preseason Coaches top-25 poll was disclosed, so let's take a look at which teams were included that Syracuse basketball will battle in the upcoming term.
Within the Atlantic Coast Conference, Duke is No. 5, and North Carolina is No. 10. The Orange will host the Blue Devils on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Tar Heels, meanwhile, will come to the Hill on Saturday, Feb. 15.
As it pertains to the non-conference docket for the 'Cuse in 2024-25, Tennessee is No. 12, and Texas is No. 19. Syracuse basketball will travel to the Volunteers on Tuesday, Dec. 3, as part of the 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge.
On Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22, Syracuse basketball will compete in the 2024 Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. On November 21, the Orange will play its first game in this event against Texas.
Syracuse field hockey holds steady in national poll
As the 2024 regular season nears its conclusion, the Orange this week remained at No. 12 overall in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll. The 'Cuse (12-4, 4-3 in the ACC), most recently, defeated No. 8 UConn on the road this past Sunday, 3-1.
The regular-season finale for Syracuse field hockey comes this Friday, beginning at 4 pm, as the Orange will host No. 9 Boston College. The ACC Network Extra will provide live-streaming coverage of this match, and after the game, the 'Cuse will honor its nine seniors and graduate students.
