This installment of Syracuse Orange sports news begins with senior linebacker Justin Barron, who came up big on the defensive end this past Saturday night as Syracuse football won at N.C. State by seven points.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Barron, in the Orange's 24-17 road victory against N.C. State, led the 'Cuse with eight total tackles. He recovered a fumble, recorded his second career interception, had two tackles for a loss, and one sack.

For those efforts, Barron was named the Senior Bowl player of the week. Additionally, both he and senior wide receiver Jackson Meeks were named ACC players of the week. Meeks, versus N.C. State, produced a career-high 11 catches, 116 yards and a touchdown.

Syracuse football has its second bye week coming up. Then, the Orange (5-1, 2-1 in the ACC) will travel to long-time rival and No. 20 Pittsburgh on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Syracuse women's tennis player wins title
Sophomore Serafima Shastova captured the 2024 ITA New England Regional singles championship in Cambridge, Mass., as she defeated Olivia Benton of Boston College in three sets in the final match.

By winning this title, Shastova has secured a berth at the NCAA Individual Championships, which will take place from November 19 to November 24 on Baylor's campus.

Up next, Syracuse women's tennis will compete at the Cornell Invitational from October 25 to October 27.

Syracuse field hockey moves up in national poll
The Orange recently won at home over both Stanford and top-20 California. This week, the 'Cuse (10-3, 4-2 in the ACC) climbed to No. 12 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll. Up next, Syracuse field hockey will travel to No. 4 Virginia this Friday, with the match scheduled to begin at 3 pm and the ACC Network Extra providing live-streaming coverage.

Syracuse men's soccer scores road triumph
The Orange recently beat Providence, 2-1, on the road as freshman defender Chimere Omeze notched the game-winning goal in the 71st minute. The 'Cuse (6-4-3, 1-2-2 in the ACC) has now won three matches in a row.

Up next, Syracuse men's soccer will head to Charlottesville for a battle with Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 19, that will start at 7 pm and get streamed live on the ACC Network Extra.

Other Syracuse Orange sports teams in action
Syracuse women's soccer, this past Sunday afternoon, lost at Pittsburgh by a final count of 3-0. Up next, the Orange (6-8-1, 0-7-0 in the ACC) will host N.C. State this Thursday beginning at 7 pm.

Syracuse volleyball recently traveled to the west coast. The Orange fell to No. 5 Stanford in three sets and also lost to California in five sets. The 'Cuse (12-6, 0-6 in the ACC) will next face Miami, at home, on October 18 beginning at 6 pm.

In three recent contests, Syracuse ice hockey fell, 4-2, at No. 8 St. Lawrence. The Orange also lost two games to RPI, one at home and one on the road in overtime, each by a final of 2-1. Up next, the 'Cuse (2-3-0) heads to No. 10 Quinnipiac on October 18 and October 19.

Syracuse women's basketball projected at No. 11 in ACC
The Orange, which won 24 games last season, including one in this past spring's NCAA Tournament, is forecast to finish at No. 11 within the Atlantic Coast Conference standings in the upcoming 2024-25 campaign, per the league's preseason poll.

In recent days, the preseason AP top-25 poll was also released, and the 'Cuse received one vote.
