Richard Toney Jr., a redshirt junior safety at Big 12 Conference member TCU who is in the transfer portal, will visit Syracuse football, according to multiple media reports on X.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Toney, who hails from Arlington, Texas, near Dallas, entered the portal on December 9 of last year, per 247Sports. I believe that Toney has one year of collegiate eligibility left.

The X account The Portal Report, along with national writer Matt Zenitz of 247Sports and CBS Sports, noted that Toney plans to visit the Orange, although no date was specified. According to Zenitz, Toney was planning to visit Purdue on Saturday, with upcoming trips to Syracuse football, Arkansas State, UConn and Western Kentucky as well.

Per his X page, Toney has noted numerous recent scholarship offers that have arrived his way. The 'Cuse staff, led by first-year head coach Fran Brown, offered Toney a few days ago, on January 2.

His recent offer sheet also includes schools such as UIW, Stephen F. Austin, UCLA, Washington State, North Texas, Western Kentucky, Arkansas State, UConn, Sam Houston State, Purdue and South Alabama.

TCU three-star transfer safety Richard Toney Jr. is eyeing a visit to Syracuse football.

In the 2024 season, TCU went 9-4 overall. Toney didn't play much, registering nine total tackles and one pass defended. The previous year, as a redshirt sophomore at Mountain West Conference school Nevada, he made nine starts, tallying 46 solo tackles, 67 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, two interceptions and one pass breakup.

When I wrote this article on Saturday, Rivals.com placed Toney as three stars and No. 755 overall in its national transfer rankings.

As a member of the 2021 recruiting cycle, Toney was a three-star player, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking. He attended Arlington High School in Arlington, Texas, where Toney also played basketball and ran track and field.

The 'Cuse, which finished the most recent term at 10-3 overall, will have an overhauled secondary for the team's 2025 season. Seniors Clarence Lewis and Alijah Clark have exhausted their college eligibility.

Freshman Marcellus Barnes Jr., redshirt sophomore Jaeden Gould (committed to UCF) and redshirt sophomore Jayden Bellamy (also headed to UCF) hit the transfer portal. Defensive backs on the Orange's 2024 roster who will likely return in 2025 include redshirt junior Duce Chestnut, redshirt sophomore Jalil Martin, junior Devin Grant, redshirt junior Berry Buxton III and freshman Davien Kerr, among others.

The Syracuse football 2025 class at the prep level includes several defensive backs, including four-star Demetres Samuel Jr., a top-150 national prospect in this cycle who stars for Heritage High School in Palm Bay, Fla.

Additionally, as I noted in another recent column, the 'Cuse has offered a scholarship to transfer defensive back Sascha Garcia, who had a terrific 2024 season at William & Mary and was named to the FCS Football Central freshman All-America team.

Reports suggest that Garcia could take a visit to Syracuse football soon.
