No Syracuse Orange football season would be complete without a game against the Boston College Eagles. As usual, the Eagles land late in Syracuse’s season in a game that typically has bowl implications for both teams. That could certainly be the case again this season with both programs trying to crawl out of the ACC basement. While it’ll be a few months until we see the Eagles, let’s take an early look at the 2026 Boston College season outlook.

Boston College head coach: Bill O’Brien

O’Brien is one of those coaches who doesn’t need much of an introduction. He rose to prominence under Bill Belichick with the Patriots before getting his first head coaching job at Penn State in 2012. O’Brien soon returned to the NFL, coaching the Houston Texans for six-plus seasons, taking them to the playoffs four times.

After getting fired by the Texans early in the 2020 season, O’Brien went back to college, spending two years as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He returned to the Patriots for Belichick’s final season in New England. Originally, O’Brien agreed to be Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, but when Boston College came calling, he jumped at the chance to be a head coach again. After leading the Eagles to a 7-6 record in his first season in Chestnut Hill, things regressed with last year’s 2-10 campaign.

Last meeting with Syracuse: Boston College 34, Syracuse 12 (2025)

Mercifully, this was the last in a long line of brutal losses for the Orange last season. There was a little hope because Boston College came to the Dome with just one win. It was also a 6-6 game at halftime, so there was everything to play for in the final 30 minutes. However, the second half belonged to the Eagles. The Syracuse offense couldn’t get anything going, while the defense couldn’t hold out forever. Boston College scored 28 straight points until Dan Villari scored a consolation touchdown in the final minutes to close out the season.

Series history

The Syracuse-Boston College “rivalry” dates back to 1924, when Syracuse beat the Eagles 10-0. The two teams met virtually every year from the early 1960s to the early 2000s, primarily as Big East foes. Eventually, the Orange joined the Eagles in the ACC, leading to annual meetings since 2013. While Syracuse owns a 34-25 advantage in the all-time series, the Eagles hold a 7-6 advantage in ACC games thanks to a three-game winning streak for BC. Remarkably, the road team has been victorious in eight of the last 10 meetings, with Syracuse winning in three of its last four trips to Chestnut Hill.

Boston College’s 2025 season

Syracuse had a bad season in 2025, but Boston College’s year was arguably worse. The Eagles opened the season with a 66-10 win over Fordham, only to lose their next 10 games. In fairness, those losses included a double-overtime game with Michigan State, a four-point loss to Cal, and a two-point loss to Georgia Tech, so the Eagles were competitive at times. They were also able to snap that losing streak with a 34-12 win over the Orange in the season finale, so they didn’t have to head into the offseason on a long losing streak.

Boston College’s key returning players

As you might expect from a team that went 2-10 last year, the Eagles went heavy in the portal and don’t bring back a lot of key players. Tight end Kaelan Chudzinski would have been one of them, but a torn Achilles will keep him out in 2026, which is surely a bad omen for the Eagles. Wide receivers Dawson Pough and Jaedn Skeete both had 13 catches last year in reserve roles. Both will be expected to step into the starting lineup this season. Center Michael Crounse is the only returning starter on the offensive line, which has been a strength for Boston College in the past.

It’s a slightly different story on defense, at least in the secondary. Safeties KP Price and Carter Davis return as one of the best safety tandems in the ACC. Price, in particular, is a key difference-maker with a pro future. Cornerbacks Max Tucker, Isaiah Farris, and TJ Green also saw consistent playing time in 2025 and will be asked to step into bigger roles this year.

Boston College’s notable additions

Boston College’s most important transfer portal addition will be quarterback Mason McKenzie. O’Brien picked him out from Saginaw Valley State at the Division II level. Needless to say, it’ll be a big step up for him in competition level. The Eagles also added Arkansas transfer Grayson Wilson, who redshirted last season, so he brings talent but little experience.

The Boston College backfield also has some new faces with Liberty transfer Evan Dickens and Maryland transfer Nolan Ray. Dickens rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns at Liberty last year, so he should be ready to compete in the ACC. Ray has been mostly a backup at Maryland, although he comes with 145 career carries and should provide suitable depth. Meanwhile, North Carolina transfer Javarius Green and Florida transfer Jackson Wade are two key wide receivers who could be instant impact players for the Eagles, despite a lack of playing time at their previous schools.

Defensively, Florida State transfer KJ Sampson and Colorado transfer Christian Hudson will provide immediate reinforcements on a lackluster defensive line. Notre Dame transfer Bodie Kahoun and Washington State transfer Anthony Palano will step in at linebacker, a position where the Eagles don’t have much coming back. The Eagles also hope that Georgia transfer Kris Jones can give them a productive edge rusher. Finally, Alabama transfer Kameron Howard will be added to an already solid secondary.

Boston College season outlook

With nearly 50 new players and several new coaches, it would be shocking to see Boston College make a complete turnaround in 2026. Relying on a Division II transfer at quarterback also makes it easy to be skeptical of the Eagles. While the secondary looks good and O’Brien deserves credit for adding talent in the portal, quarterback, wide receiver, and offensive line are all huge question marks heading into the season. That typically doesn’t translate to success, especially with a lot of new faces in the front seven as well.

The Eagles can potentially change that narrative with two non-conference home games to begin the season against Cincinnati and Rutgers. Both could be winnable if things break well for Boston College. Of course, the ACC schedule is expected to be tough. Home dates with Virginia Tech, Pitt, and Florida State will be challenging, as are road trips to SMU, Georgia Tech, and Duke. The Eagles also have to play at Notre Dame and at Miami in November, so if injuries and depth become an issue, things could get ugly. Even if the Eagles can get off to a good start, getting to six wins and a bowl game doesn’t seem likely.

When and where does Boston College play Syracuse in 2026?

Syracuse will visit the Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 21. There is no time set for the game, which will be played at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Prediction: Syracuse 38, Boston College 17

A fourth straight loss to Boston College would be a disaster for Fran Brown and the Orange, especially after that loss in Chestnut Hill in 2024. The good news is the Eagles have to play at Notre Dame right before hosting Syracuse and then have to travel to Miami the following week. Who knows how injuries might impact both teams this late in the season. But ahead of the season, the Orange have fewer question marks at quarterback and offensive line than the Eagles, which should be enough to believe Syracuse can take care of business on the road.
