Syracuse football's new quarterbacks coach is a two-time Super Bowl champion, and that's awesome.
Per a release from SU Athletics, the Orange has hired Sean Ryan as its new quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the upcoming 2026 campaign. The previous 'Cuse quarterbacks coach was co-offensive coordinator Michael Johnson, who had taken over the QB coaching role from Nunzio Campanile last November.
Campanile has since moved on to be the offensive coordinator at UConn. According to cuse.com, Johnson remains the co-offensive coordinator and has gone back to coaching the Orange's tight ends.
Ryan, a native of Hudson Falls, N.Y., has almost three decades of coaching experience, including 18 seasons in the NFL. He was on the staff of former Syracuse football legend Tom Coughlin when Coughlin was the head coach of the New York Giants and won two Super Bowl titles there.
Syracuse football has its new quarterbacks coach.
Ryan is a versatile former NFL assistant, having coached on both sides of the ball. He has served as a quarterbacks coach and a wide receivers coach with several NFL teams, among other position groups. Most recently, Ryan was a senior defensive assistant and coached the outside linebackers for the Miami Dolphins.
Previously, he has served as an assistant coach for NFL squads such as the Carolina Panthers, the Detroit Lions, the Houston Texans and the New York Giants, where Ryan won Super Bowl championships in 2007 and 2011.
In 2023, he was an offensive analyst working with the quarterbacks at Southeastern Conference member South Carolina. He was also the running backs coach and the recruiting coordinator at Harvard in 2006. Other prior collegiate stops for Ryan included Columbia, Boston College, Colgate, Albany and Siena. Ryan played defensive back and outside linebacker at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
"Sean Ryan is a professional," Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown said in the media statement posted to cuse.com. "To be able to go and get him from the NFL, especially with the number of NFL teams that would be interested in getting him with all the movement going on, was great for us."
Brown has significantly overhauled his assistant coaching staff this offseason after the 'Cuse went just 3-9 overall in the 2025 term. FootballScoop recently reported that the Orange is expected to hire Bowling Green special teams coordinator Alex Bayer in the same role with Syracuse football.
