Robert Wright III, a sophomore point guard at Big 12 Conference member BYU, plans to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple media reports.
A few years back, the 6-foot-1 Wright was recruited heavily by Syracuse basketball, and he formed a strong relationship with Gerry McNamara, who is now the Orange's new head coach, replacing Adrian Autry.
Might McNamara and his 'Cuse assistant coaching staff make a run at Wright, who hails from Wilmington, Del., and began his college career at another Big 12 school, Baylor?
We'll have to wait and see. One thing I am fairly certain about is that Wright is going to command a lot of attention in the transfer portal, and the financial packages that he will be offered by suitors should be substantial.
On Wednesday, in national transfer rankings from 247Sports, Wright checked in as four stars, No. 3 overall and No. 1 at point guard. As a prep recruit, he was a five-star prospect within the 2024 class, first starring at Neumann-Goretti High School in Philadelphia before heading to the powerhouse Montverde Academy in Montverde, Fla.
Syracuse basketball needs a starting point guard for next season.
To date, since the transfer portal opened, at least seven players from the Orange's 2025-26 roster have decided to enter the portal, including starting point guard Naithan George, a junior.
For McNamara and his staff, finding a starting point guard and a starting center for 2026-27 are arguably the program's top priorities. Wright would be a terrific get for the 'Cuse, but it remains to be seen if there is mutual interest between him and the Orange.
In August of 2022, Wright took an unofficial visit to the Hill to participate in Syracuse basketball's annual Elite Camp. There was talk of him officially visiting SU at some point, but he pledged to Baylor before that transpired.
In 2025-26, BYU went 23-12 and made this spring's NCAA Tournament. Wright was named to the All-Big 12 third team. He averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game while connecting on 46.7 percent from the field, 41.0 percent from beyond the arc and 82.1 percent from the free-throw line.
To reiterate, it's not clear whether Syracuse basketball would pursue Wright, but I'd love to see it happen. He's the goods.
