Our latest round-up of Syracuse Orange sports news starts with the Syracuse football program.
The Orange, under first-year head coach Fran Brown, notched a big-time road win at then-No. 25 and previously undefeated UNLV this past Friday night in Las Vegas. The 'Cuse squeaked by the Rebels in overtime, 44-41, to move to 4-1 so far in the 2024 season.
Next up, Syracuse football will travel to N.C. State this coming Saturday night. The Orange needs two more victories to qualify for a post-season bowl game for the third consecutive year.
On Sunday, as regularly happens after the full Saturday docket of college football games, several national pundits published their latest bowl projections. Analyst Brad Crawford of 247Sports and CBS Sports has Syracuse football facing Southeastern Conference member and top-15 LSU (4-1) at the Gator Bowl on January 2 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Jerry Palm of CBS Sports, meanwhile, has the 'Cuse battling Pac-12 Conference school Washington State (4-1) at the Holiday Bowl on December 27 in San Diego.
Several other Syracuse Orange sports teams were in action over the weekend.
Syracuse men's soccer lands first ACC win
On Saturday night, at home, the Orange defeated Notre Dame, 2-1, giving the 'Cuse its first Atlantic Coast Conference triumph of the fall season. For Syracuse men's soccer, it scored second-half goals from graduate student defender/midfielder Ben Rosenblatt and graduate student midfielder Gabe Threadgold to prevail over the Fighting Irish. Next up, the Orange (5-4-3, 1-2-2 in the ACC) will head to Providence for a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm, with streaming coverage on FloFC.
Syracuse ice hockey starts off season strong
The Orange began its 2024-25 campaign with a two-game home series against Stonehill. And the 'Cuse won both contests, on Friday night and then on Saturday afternoon, by a final of 4-0. Up next, Syracuse ice hockey (2-0-0) will travel to No. 8 St. Lawrence this Tuesday evening, with the puck drop scheduled for 6 pm.
Syracuse women's soccer falls in league encounter
The Orange lost to No. 17 Notre Dame, 3-0, at home on Saturday. The 'Cuse has fallen in six consecutive matches, as Syracuse women's soccer has also played four straight top-20 opponents. The Orange (6-7-1, 0-6-0 in the ACC) will look to get back on track when it travels to Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 13, in a conference clash that is set to begin at 1:30 pm.
Cross-country teams compete in Pa.
On Saturday, the Syracuse women's and men's cross-country teams competed at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa., marking the 50th anniversary of this event. Per SU Athletics, freshman Selma Anderson won the opening race of the Paul Short Run, finishing 12 seconds ahead of her competition over the 6k course.
