Pittsburgh transfer quarterback Christian Veilleux, a three-star prospect in the portal this off-season, visited Syracuse football this past weekend, according to media reports, but he's headed to another college suitor.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Veilleux, who was also recruited by the Orange while in high school, said via his X page that he has committed to Sun Belt Conference member Georgia State. Per reports, he has two seasons of collegiate eligibility left.
Veilleux said via his X account on April 16 that he was entering the transfer portal. He began his college career at Big Ten Conference school Penn State before moving to another Pennsylvania program, fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Pitt.
During the 2023 season, when the Panthers went 3-9 overall, including a 28-13 loss to the 'Cuse last November in New York City, Veilleux completed 51.1 percent of his passes for 1,179 yards, with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions, according to ESPN data.
Syracuse football recently hosted transfer quarterback Christian Veilleux on a visit.
According to reports from 247Sports analyst Mike McAllister and others, Veilleux took an official visit to the Orange last weekend.
Veilleux, a Canadian product who is originally from Ottawa, Ontario, was a three-star, nationally ranked prospect in the 2021 class. Before joining Penn State, he suited up at the Bullis School in Potomac, Md.
While in prep school, per his bio on the 247Sports Web site, Veilleux held more than 20 scholarship offers. Besides Syracuse football, his offer sheet included schools such as Penn State, Arizona State, Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Louisville, LSU, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Tennessee, UCLA, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others.
Within the 2021 cycle, the industry-generated 247Sports Composite placed Veilleux at No. 441 nationwide, No. 36 at quarterback and No. 16 in Maryland.
Looking ahead to the Orange's 2024 season, rising senior Kyle McCord, a four-star transfer from Ohio State, will be the team's starting quarterback. However, he only has one year of college eligibility remaining, which to me suggests that the starting QB role at the 'Cuse in 2025 is up for grabs.
With two seasons of collegiate eligibility left, Veilleux could have competed for the starting quarterback position in the 2025 term, but if he's going to be the starter at Georgia State in 2024, it's understandable for him to transfer to a school where he can start right away.
As far as the Syracuse football quarterback room in 2024, beyond McCord, there are redshirt junior Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, redshirt sophomore Braden Davis, 2024 three-star commit Jakhari Williams from Georgia, and several preferred walk-ons.
Recent reports have stated that Davis, during spring practices and at the recent spring game, has been taking some reps at wide receiver.
