Syracuse Basketball: Latest NIT bracketology before selection reveal on Sunday night
By Neil Adler
One expert said on Sunday that Syracuse basketball is a lock to make the 2024 NIT, as selections for the 32-team event will be announced on Sunday evening.
Multiple bracketologists have included the Orange in their NIT projections over the past few days, after the 'Cuse (20-12, 11-9 in the ACC) lost to eventual champion N.C. State in the ACC Tournament's second round last Wednesday night.
That disappointing setback for the Orange meant the team had no shot to earn an invite to to the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and as such the 'Cuse is missing the Big Dance for the third straight year.
Regardless, under first-year head coach Adrian Autry, Syracuse basketball won 20 games in a regular season for the first occasion in a decade, and the Orange will have an opportunity to play in a post-season event, that being the NIT.
Here are the latest bracketology predictions for Syracuse basketball.
On Sunday, via thebarkingcrow.com, the Orange was forecast to face Ivy League member Princeton. The rest of the 'Cuse region is as follows: Providence versus Boston College, Washington versus San Francisco, and Villanova versus South Florida.
That's an intriguing region with several former long-time Big East Conference foes of the Orange, along with Washington and Mike Hopkins, who is in his final season leading the Huskies, as well as fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Boston College.
I feel really bad for South Florida. The Bulls have put forth a tremendous 2023-24 stanza, however, they fell in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament and aren't expected to receive an at-large invite to the NCAA Tournament.
Also on Sunday, over at nitbracketology.com, Syracuse basketball was predicted to battle the No. 2 seed in that region, Villanova. Other match-ups in the Orange's region here are No. 1 seed Pittsburgh versus Duquesne, No. 4 seed LSU versus the University of California, Irvine, and No. 3 seed Iowa versus Bradley.
In the 2023-24 regular season, the 'Cuse swept its two-game set with fellow ACC member Pitt. The Panthers were a top-four seed in the ACC Tournament and on the bubble for the upcoming Big Dance.
However, due to some bid-stealers in other conference tourneys, it does look like Pittsburgh may be relegated to the NIT. LSU, out of the Southeastern Conference, played at the JMA Wireless Dome in late November, with Syracuse basketball destroying the Tigers.
The selections for the 2024 NIT will be unveiled on Sunday beginning at 9:30 pm on ESPN2.
