Syracuse Basketball: Here's what top analysts are saying about 5-star Donnie Freeman
By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball 2024 commit Donnie Freeman, a five-star power forward from Washington, D.C., will compete in the prestigious McDonald's All-America game this Tuesday, April 2, at the Toyota Center in Houston.
On Sunday, according to multiple national analysts and scouts, participants in this upcoming event were involved in practices and scrimmages, per media reports. I've come across a bevy of high praise for the 6-foot-9 Freeman, a top-10 national prospect in the senior class, regarding his play at the McDonald's All-America practice session and the scrimmage.
Freeman, who is officially signed with the Orange in its stellar two-member 2024 cycle, will also vie for a national championship later this week when he and his teammates at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., suit up in the eight-squad Chipotle Nationals beginning on April 4 in Brownsburg, Ind., near Indianapolis.
As I noted in a separate column on Sunday, Freeman was recently named an All-League second-team performer in the country's top high school conference, the 14-member Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Scholastic (“EYBL Scholastic”).
Here's what top experts are saying about Syracuse basketball 2024 five-star commit Donnie Freeman.
On Sunday at the McDonald's All-America practice and scrimmage, those analysts and scouts to dish out some love to Freeman included Rivals.com basketball recruiting director Rob Cassidy, 247Sports national basketball director Eric Bossi, On3 national analyst/scout Jamie Shaw, analyst/scout Tobias Bass and 247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein.
Cassidy wrote in part, "Syracuse fans should be ecstatic about Freeman’s trajectory, as his development seems to be hitting a spurt at the most opportune time. He feels like a smart bet to be a player that steals the show when the McDonald's game tips on Tuesday."
Said Bossi on Freeman, "He still needs to add some more mass to his frame, but he's gotten significantly stronger over the last year at IMG Academy and has really rounded out his offensive game. The three-ball was dropping at a very good rate and he was among the bounciest finishers at the rim."
From Shaw: "Listed at 6-foot-9, the forward is effective in the passing lanes and he is very efficient on offense. His touch popped in this setting, knocking down multiple one and two-dribble pull-ups and catch-and-shoot threes. Freeman is a fluid athlete with a switchable defensive upside, and he is figuring out his offensive game and things are coming together quickly."
Finkelstein echoed the sentiments of these other experts, noting that Freeman was excellent in the practices and scrimmages. The 247Sports scout said that Freeman's height and length are big advantages for the Syracuse basketball signee, with Finkelstein adding, "The fact that he's been shooting the ball consistently from three and showing some lateral mobility for his size has only added to the intrigue thus far."
Needless to say, myself and all of 'Cuse Nation are excited to see Donnie play for the Orange next season.
