Syracuse Basketball: Final visit for 4-star transfer target Dakota Leffew, then a decision
By Neil Adler
Per reports, there is one final campus visit for Syracuse basketball four-star transfer target Dakota Leffew, then my sense is he will make a decision in the near future.
Top national analyst/scout Jamie Shaw of On3 reports via his X page that the Mount St. Mary's senior guard is scheduled to take his fourth and final visit on Monday, to Southeastern Conference school Georgia.
The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Leffew visited another SEC member, South Carolina, over the weekend. Has also taken visits to the Orange and Villanova.
If his visit to Georgia is his last one, I have to believe that Leffew, who hails from Hampton, Ga., is winding down his recruiting process. At least I hope that he is.
When I wrote this article on Monday morning, I didn't see any predictions from analysts in Leffew's recruitment between the 247Sports Web site, Rivals.com, and the On3 Web site.
Syracuse basketball should know soon whether it has prevailed for four-star transfer Dakota Leffew.
On April 11, On3 national reporter Joe Tipton first reported that Leffew had a top six of the Orange, Villanova, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Georgia and Xavier. He will have visited four of these suitors, but not Xavier or Pittsburgh, to the best of my knowledge.
As a senior in the 2023-24 campaign for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference ("MAAC") squad Mount St. Mary's, Leffew averaged 17.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while hitting on 43.0 percent from the field, 36.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 76.5 percent from the charity stripe.
His head coach at Mount St. Mary's, Dan Engelstad, was recently hired as an assistant coach with the 'Cuse.
Since the transfer portal opened on March 18, running for 45 days, the Orange has seen two guards/wings hit the portal, and they are sophomores Quadir Copeland and Justin Taylor, who has committed to James Madison. Sophomore Judah Mintz is headed to the 2024 NBA Draft process, so Syracuse basketball coaches are on the hunt for another veteran guard for their 2024-25 roster.
The 'Cuse has two high school seniors in its 2024 class, along with two four-star transfers in Delaware senior forward Jyáre Davis and Colorado senior center Eddie Lampkin Jr. At this juncture, Syracuse basketball has three open scholarships.
In national transfer rankings this off-season, Leffew is rated four stars by the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking, On3 and 247Sports, which places him at No. 110 overall and No. 17 at shooting guard.
