Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz, who has been speculated as a potentially major candidate for the Syracuse basketball head coaching vacancy, is off the board. Per a post on X from CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein on Friday, Schertz "has received a new long-term agreement to remain with the Billikens, per a school spokesman."
Oh, well.
National observers pegged Schertz to likely be one of the most sought-after candidates in this offseason's head coaching carousel, but he will remain with Atlantic 10 Conference school Saint Louis. Congrats to him.

Significant Atlantic 10 News.
Schertz has led Saint Louis to a 27-4 record in 2025-26.
In the 2025-26 regular season, Schertz led the Billikens to a 27-4 overall record and a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference title. On Friday, Saint Louis, the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, was getting pasted by No. 9 seed George Washington in the quarterfinals, as I wrote this article.
Even if the Billikens get bounced, they should still hear their name called on Selection Sunday for this spring's NCAA Tournament.
Syracuse basketball's next head coach won't be Josh Schertz.
Some experts are suggesting that at this point in the head coaching search process at the 'Cuse, the two names to watch are Siena head coach and former SU assistant Gerry McNamara and South Florida head coach and New York native Bryan Hodgson.
One thing to keep in mind. Syracuse's next athletics director, Toledo AD Bryan Blair, was just announced by SU on Thursday, and former SU basketball head coach Adrian Autry was fired a day earlier.
Yes, a new Syracuse basketball head coach and assistant staff need to be in place before the transfer portal opens next month; however, from what I'm hearing from some people who are well-informed in this process, it's too early to anoint McNamara and Hodgson as any sort of co-favorites for the 'Cuse gig.
Do I think that GMac and Hodgson are under consideration? Absolutely. Will other candidates be considered? You better believe it. I'm not sitting here saying that I'm the most plugged-in person out there. Not in the least.
At the same time, a lot of so-called "insiders" are spewing a lot of inaccurate stuff on social media. It happens. What I can say with confidence is this: Schertz is off the board. Hodgson is a candidate. McNamara is, too, although I'm hearing from some folks that it might be "too soon" for GMac to take over his alma mater (he's in his second season guiding Siena). Other candidates will be interviewed.
Not much else to report at this time. But I will soon.
