New Syracuse football 2027 DL commit: Elite size, agility and 'relentless motor,' coach says

On Saturday night, Syracuse football landed a massive verbal pledge (no pun intended) from a 2027 defensive lineman in the talent-rich DMV who has tremendous upside and quite the athletic background.

His name is Chima Okechukwu, a 6-foot-9, 315-pound player who attends the Mt. Zion Preparatory Academy in Lanham, Md. This past June, Okechukwu played well at an Orange prospect camp, he took an official visit to the Hill, and he landed a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse.

Fast-forward two months, and Okechukwu is verbally committed to Syracuse football. Inside the Loud House caught up with Mt. Zion Prep associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator Ru Moss to learn more about Okechukwu.

One thing that many SU fans likely don't know: Okechukwu, heading into the 2026 season, is a first-year football player at Mt. Zion Prep. Said Moss: Okechukwu's "skills on the field are still ascending as the days go by. First-year player with a relentless motor. He has elite size and agility."

Moss tells me that Okechukwu's offers came after Mt. Zion Prep conducted its spring practices. His full scholarship offer sheet, per his coach, included the Orange, West Virginia, Maryland, James Madison, Maine, Monmouth, Morgan State, Temple and Howard.

According to Moss, when Okechukwu was younger, his primary sports were soccer and track, and then basketball followed. In the 2025-26 season, Okechukwu played center for the boys' basketball prep team at Mt. Zion Prep.

Okechukwu is "definitely a quiet leader," Moss says. "Leads by example."

Moss notes the relationship that Okechukwu has built up throughout his recruitment with Dre Kates, Syracuse football's special assistant to the head coach, and Alex Kelly, a scouting assistant with the 'Cuse who focuses on the DMV.

"Syracuse is home for Chima, because of the transparent atmosphere," Moss says. "He sees a lot that he can relate with, whether it’s players, coaches and the staff."
