Quarterback is the most important position in team sports, and Syracuse's QB depth is being tested these days. The Orange (2-3 overall, 0-3 in ACC) had to rely on fifth-year player Danny Lauter, a transfer from Georgetown, in the late stages of SU's three-point loss at Virginia last Saturday night.

Lauter, to his credit, threw a touchdown pass. Yet there is concern about the 'Cuse quarterback room moving forward, should Lauter be the starting signal-caller. It would bring back memories of what happened in 2025, as starter Steve Angeli went down in late September and the Orange crumbled after that.

To be fair, though, Lauter has talent. "He did a really good job of just staying focused on the playbook," Brown said during his weekly press conference on Monday. "It takes a lot of heart for a young man to all of a sudden being on prep teams early in the week and then getting called up and being able to go in."

Should fifth-year player Angeli, senior Amari Odom and senior Malachi Nelson all be unavailable for Saturday's home Atlantic Coast Conference contest against Louisville (3-3 overall, 2-2 in ACC), either Lauter or true freshman Zaid Lott would likely get the starting nod.

Added Brown: "There’s a lot that’s going to happen within these next 48 hours. You’ve got to go through these next 48 hours first and then we’ll continue to move on and take it from there. Getting them as many reps as possible."

On the 'Cuse projected depth chart for the Louisville game, Odom, Angeli, Nelson and Lauter are all listed at quarterback. Later this week, Syracuse football will submit availability reports to the ACC. Brown, at his Monday presser, didn't rule out any of his quarterbacks for Saturday night's affair against the Cardinals.

Syracuse football is dealing with a lot of injuries to its quarterbacks.

Brown gave updates on his three injured QBs. Angeli, who is still dealing with the effects of the Achilles tendon he tore last September, should be cleared to return to practice either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Odom replaced Angeli as the starting quarterback in the team's thrilling overtime triumph at UConn earlier this month. Yet Odom has a shoulder injury, and he is expected to undergo further evaluation this week to see if he's able to play on Saturday.

Nelson started against the Cavaliers. He played well and helped Syracuse football build up a 10-point halftime lead. However, he was unable to finish the game due to an upper-body injury. According to Brown, X-rays showed that Nelson hasn't broken any bones.

The Orange head coach says that he hopes Nelson can practice this week. Inside the Loud House will continue to monitor SU's quarterback situation leading up to the team's contest on Saturday against the Cardinals at the JMA Wireless Dome.
