Saint Mary's sophomore Mikey Lewis, a high-scoring guard and former Syracuse basketball recruiting target, is entering the transfer portal, according to a post on X from national analyst Sam Kayser.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Lewis, who hails from Oakland, Calif., had a strong 2025-26 campaign for the Gaels, which went 27-6 overall and claimed a share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title. Saint Mary's was a No. 7 seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament's South Region, where it fell in the first round to No. 10 seed Texas A&M.

On March 23, long-time Saint Mary's head coach Randy Bennett was named the next head coach of Big 12 Conference member Arizona State. That same day, Saint Mary's associate head coach Mickey McConnell was promoted to the Gaels' head coach.

The spring transfer portal will run from April 7 to April 21, although when a head coaching change occurs at a school, a 15-day portal window will also open five days after the new head coach at that particular program is hired or publicly announced.

As a sophomore in 2025-26, Lewis averaged 26.8 minutes, 13.9 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest while connecting on 39.8 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from beyond the arc and 88.2 percent from the free-throw line.

He was named to the All-WCC first team. In 2024-25, as a college newbie, Lewis was selected as the WCC sixth man of the year and resided on the conference's All-Freshman squad. In national transfer rankings from 247Sports, on Thursday, he was rated as four stars, No. 13 nationally and No. 1 at combo guard.

Syracuse basketball recruited Mikey Lewis in high school.

The Orange staff offered a scholarship to Lewis in late April of 2023. Reports indicated that for a period of time, the 'Cuse was recruiting him hard, and he had an interest in visiting the Hill, but that never materialized.

Lewis was a top-100 national prospect in the 2024 class. He spent his senior year at the powerhouse Prolific Prep, which, back then, was located in Napa, Calif. In his senior term, Prolific Prep advanced to the Chipotle Nationals, which is an annual season-ending national championship tournament in high school hoops.

Whether new Syracuse basketball head coach Gerry McNamara and his staff, which will be announced soon, would pursue Lewis again remains to be seen. McNamara is meeting with current 'Cuse players on Thursday to get a better feel for roster retention. One thing I'll note here is that Lewis is a solid 3-point shooter, and Syracuse basketball could use that in 2026-27.

Guards on SU's 2025-26 roster who could potentially come back for next season include junior Naithan George, freshman Kiyan Anthony, freshman Luke Fennell and freshman Aaron Womack, who took a redshirt this past stanza. Wing/small forward Nate Kingz is technically a redshirt senior, but he has said he may apply for a waiver with the NCAA to play another season of Division I basketball.
