Syracuse football ‘definitely a contender’ to flip 4-star cornerback – analyst
By Neil Adler
The Syracuse football coaching staff hosted 2024 four-star cornerback Josh Philostin on an official visit this past weekend, and media reports suggest that Philostin’s trip to Central New York went quite well.
In fact, top expert Adam Gorney, the national recruiting director at Rivals.com, wrote in an article that the 5-foot-11, 175-pound Philostin “loved the vibes given off by new coach Fran Brown and his staff.”
Philostin, who hails from Florida, said in a post on his X page that his recent official visit to the Orange was “amazing.”
Now, Philostin is verbally committed to Big Ten Conference member Indiana. He pledged to the Hoosiers in October, and Gorney says that Philostin will be on a visit to Indiana this coming weekend.
The Hoosiers have a new head coach, Curt Cignetti. In late November, Cignetti was named the new head coach of Indiana, after leading James Madison to an 11-1 record in the 2023 regular season as well as a No. 24 ranking in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll.
Syracuse football coaches are trying to flip 2024 four-star cornerback Josh Philostin.
Gorney says that Philostin having taken an official visit to the ‘Cuse “means a flip is a possibility.” The analyst adds that Syracuse football is “definitely a contender now” for Philostin. Let’s see how this all pans out.
Philostin is a senior at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Fla. He picked up a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff on December 4, according to his X page.
Per 247Sports, throughout his recruiting process, Philostin has amassed more than 30 offers from schools including Rutgers, Arkansas, Duke, Illinois, Iowa, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Wisconsin, among others.
Brown, who was formally introduced on December 4 as the new ‘Cuse head coach, replacing Dino Babers, most recently was the defensive backs coach at Georgia. Brown has also held coaching positions at Rutgers, Temple and Baylor.
The Orange’s new defensive coordinator, Elijah Robinson, is currently the interim head coach and co-defensive coordinator at Texas A&M. Before that, he coached at Baylor, Temple and Penn State.
ESPN, within the 2024 class, rates Philostin as four stars and the No. 36 cornerback. Both the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking rate him as three stars, a top-500 national prospect and a top-50 cornerback in the senior cycle.
On Sunday, Brown and his staff received verbal commitments from three high school players in the 2024 class. Those pledging to Syracuse football were three-star defensive end/tight end Jahide Lesaine Jr., who flipped from Kent State; three-star wide receiver Jaylan Hornsby, who flipped from Texas A&M; and four-star running back Yasin Willis, who flipped from Pittsburgh.
