. . Frank Maloney. 3. player. 827.

Now, a little bit of a throwback to Frank Maloney, who took over the program in 1974 and held onto the job through 1980. During that time, Syracuse went 32-46 with just one bowl game appearance. The Orange won the Independence Bowl following a 6-5 regular season in 1979.

7-5 proved to be the height of the Maloney era which included just three winning seasons.

Maloney had a tough act to follow, taking over for Ben Schwartzwalder, who led Syracuse to the 1959 national championship and coached the team for 25 seasons.

The program was able to recover from the six mediocre seasons because Maloney was followed by Dick MacPherson who restored the program to national relevance.
