Syracuse Football: 4-star quarterback target in Md. putting up big numbers
By Neil Adler
We’ve moved into the second half of the 2023 season for many high-school teams around the country, and to date in the current term, Syracuse football recruit Malik Washington from Maryland is having himself a stellar junior year after also shining in 2022 as a sophomore.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Washington, a 2025 four-star quarterback who received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff in late September, is a standout at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Md., where he has also excelled in basketball.
To date, in his football recruitment, Washington holds offers from a variety of high-major programs beyond Syracuse football, including Virginia, Boston College, Duke, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Arkansas, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, James Madison, Marshall, Temple, Toledo and Western Michigan, among others.
Multiple recruiting services, at present, rank Washington as a top-250 national prospect, a top-15 pro-style quarterback, and a top-10 player in Maryland within the 2025 class.
Syracuse football recruit Malik Washington, a 2025 4-star QB, is having an excellent junior season.
Per the MaxPreps Web site, Archbishop Spalding is 6-1 so far in the 2023 stanza. The Cavaliers, this coming Friday night, Oct. 20, will host the St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia.
This past weekend, Archbishop Spalding had a bye. In its most recent game, on the road, the Cavaliers crushed the Gilman School from Baltimore, on Friday, Oct. 6, by a final count of 49-7.
In that victory, Washington completed 15-of-18 passes for 195 yards through the air, with three passing touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran twice for 11 yards and one score on the ground, according to MaxPreps. By the way, at this juncture in the current season, MaxPreps ranks Archbishop Spalding as a top-five squad across the entire state of Maryland.
Through the team’s first seven games of 2023, Washington is completing 64.5 percent of his pass attempts, with 17 touchdowns and just six interceptions, per MaxPreps. He’s carried the ball 12 times for 92 yards and three rushing touchdowns. To top it all off, Washington has caught one pass for 13 yards.
As a sophomore in the 2022 campaign, Washington’s first season as the starting quarterback for Archbishop Spalding, he was a key contributor as the Cavaliers went 11-1 and claimed a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association conference title.
In 2022, Washington tallied 2,979 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, against only eight interceptions. He also ran the ball 33 times for 167 yards and four scores on the ground.
I’ll continue to track how Washington and Archbishop Spalding fare in the 2023 stanza, while also keeping tabs on Washington’s recruiting process. He’s an immensely talented quarterback within the 2025 cycle, and I hope that Syracuse football emerges as a viable contender in his recruitment.
