One of the top players in the rising-junior class, who holds a Syracuse basketball scholarship offer, has moved on to an elite prep-school program for his upcoming 2023-24 campaign.

Not too long ago, consensus 2025 five-star shooting guard Darryn Peterson said on Twitter that he was transferring to Huntington Expression Prep, a top-notch squad located in Huntington, W.Va.

As a sophomore in 2022-23, Peterson was named a first-team All-American by MaxPreps as he averaged about 31 points, nine rebounds and three steals per contest for the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Peterson, who is rated in the top four nationally in the 2025 cycle by all of the primary recruiting services, is a significant contender for the No. 1 overall ranking in his class. The Orange coaching staff offered him a scholarship in late April.

Syracuse basketball 2025 five-star recruit Darryn Peterson has a new high-school team.

Per the MaxPreps Web site, Huntington Expression Prep sported a 15-10 overall record during the 2022-23 season, and it competed versus some top-notch opponents, including the Southern California Academy, the Combine Academy, the Oak Hill Academy, the Calvary Christian Academy, the La Lumiere School and the IMG Academy.

Besides the ‘Cuse, Peterson’s offer sheet includes teams such as Louisville, Kansas, UCLA, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, St. John’s, Texas, West Virginia, Xavier, Alabama, Cincinnati, Illinois, Kansas State, Michigan, TCU, Texas A&M and Washington State, among others.

In June, Peterson was named to the All-Tournament squad as the USA U16 national team claimed the gold medal at the 2023 FIBA U16 Americas Championship in Merida, Mexico. He also landed high praise from analysts and scouts for his performances in recent months on the AAU circuit as a member of the Ohio-based Team Phenom United in the Adidas 3SSB league.

Jason Jordan, a Rivals.com national analyst, recently wrote in part that “Darryn Peterson is must-see TV every time he touches the hardwood. His special blend of speed, quickness and athleticism makes him appear like a man amongst boys…”

Peterson is one of numerous high-school players who hold Syracuse basketball offers and have elected, in recent months, to transfer to new schools for the 2023-24 campaign. Jerry Easter II, a 2025 five-star point guard, and Darius Adams, a 2025 four-star combo guard, both have headed to La Lumiere in La Porte, Ind.

Nikola Bundalo, a 2025 four-star big man, is now at the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. This past February, 2025 four-star shooting guard Kiyan Anthony said he would transfer to Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y.
