Another Syracuse basketball recruiting target is heading to long-time rival Georgetown.

On Sunday, 2024 four-star wing Caleb Williams from Washington, D.C., said via Twitter that he has verbally committed to the Hoyas and its new head coach, former Providence boss Ed Cooley.

Since replacing Patrick Ewing as the Georgetown head coach in March, Cooley has done a lot of positive things on the recruiting trail. Besides landing the 6-foot-7 Williams, for example, in mid-May, the Hoyas picked up a verbal commitment from 2024 four-star center Thomas Sorber from Philadelphia.

Sorber, like Williams, held a scholarship offer from the Orange. Williams chose Big East Conference member Georgetown over other finalists Syracuse basketball, Villanova, Michigan, Indiana, Virginia and Miami. The top-100 national prospect had officially visited Michigan, Indiana, Villanova, and Georgetown.

Syracuse basketball has missed out on 2024 four-star wing Caleb Williams.

The ‘Cuse coaching staff offered a scholarship to Williams in late April. He is a standout rising senior at the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

In grassroots basketball, Williams competes for the 17U squad of the D.C.-based Team Takeover in Nike’s EYBL league, which is one of the favorites to win the prestigious Peach Jam tournament early next month.

On Team Takeover, Williams plays alongside Syracuse basketball 2024 commit Donnie Freeman, a four-star power forward and a top-30 overall player in the junior cycle.

Both Orange head coach Adrian Autry and assistant coach Brenden Straughn previously served as assistants with the Team Takeover program.

Besides Syracuse basketball, Williams’ offer sheet has included Florida State, Michigan, Indiana, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Providence and Ole Miss, among others.

To date, the ‘Cuse has two verbal commitments in the 2024 class, from Freeman and from four-star shooting guard Elijah Moore out of New York City. Syracuse basketball coaches continue to pursue 2024 four-star point guard Mikey Lewis from California and 2024 five-star guard Jalil Bethea out of Philadelphia.

When I penned this column, ESPN rated Williams as the No. 85 national prospect in the 2024 cycle. At the time of this writing, the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rated Williams at No. 101 nationally, No. 19 at power forward and No. 2 in Washington, D.C., within the 2024 class.
