As recruiting analysts were predicting over the last few days, Syracuse football saw 2023 four-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers flip his commitment from the Orange to his home-state Southeastern Conference team, South Carolina.
The 6-foot-2 Sellers put forth one of the best senior seasons for a high school around the country during the recently completed 2022 season, leading South Florence High School in Florence, S.C., to a state championship.
The ‘Cuse coaching staff offered a scholarship to the top-15 dual-threat quarterback this past January after Sellers had de-committed from Virginia.
At the end of the 2021 stanza, the Cavaliers had numerous coaching changes, including Cavaliers’ offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck leaving for the Orange.
In recent weeks, after Syracuse football registered a 7-5 record in the 2022 regular season, Anae bolted for the same position with N.C. State, while Beck was promoted to offensive coordinator on the Hill.
Syracuse football long-time QB commit LaNorris Sellers has flipped to South Carolina.
Media reports suggest that Sellers had developed a strong relationship with Beck, however, South Carolina began recruiting Sellers hard lately, and the appeal of playing close to home was not something that the ‘Cuse could offer this talented young man.
I’m wishing Sellers all the best, and I sincerely hope that Orange fans don’t trash him on social media. At the same time, while this recruiting “miss” stings for Syracuse football and its fan base, it’s not the end of the world.
The Orange still has numerous talented players in its quarterback room, including starter Garrett Shrader, Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and Justin Lamson.
It’s understandable that some ‘Cuse fans feel that Sellers didn’t remain loyal to Beck and the Orange, but let’s remember that his home-state squad only began recruiting him recently, offering a scholarship to Sellers in October.
In the 2022 campaign, he threw for 2,948 yards, with 45 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He also rushed for 1,338 yards and scored 17 touchdowns on the ground.
Sellers helped lead South Florence to the South Carolina Class AAAA state championship, and he recently vaulted to four stars, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
Rated four stars, No. 156 nationally, No. 12 at quarterback and No. 3 in South Carolina per On3, Sellers announced his commitment to the Gamecocks on Friday late morning.
He had received more than 10 offers throughout his recruitment, including two recent scholarship offers from Liberty and Georgia Tech.
The early national signing period began on Wednesday, Dec. 21, and here is information on the various 2023 recruits who signed their national letters of intent this week to suit up for Syracuse football.
