Syracuse basketball versus Cornell odds, prediction and how to watch
By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball has won four games in a row and will wrap up its non-conference schedule during the 2022-23 season when the Orange hosts long-time foe and Central New York neighbor Cornell this coming Saturday afternoon at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Big Red (7-2), out of the Ivy League, is no cupcake. Cornell’s two setbacks are by a combined four points to Atlantic Coast Conference squads Boston College and Miami, with each of these games occurring on the road for the Big Red. We should point out that in the latest Associated Press and Coaches polls, the Hurricanes check in at No. 25.
Now, I’ll readily acknowledge that Cornell’s victories to date in 2022-23 aren’t over a bunch of really strong foes, however, it’s worth noting that the Big Red pounded Monmouth on the road in late November, 81-63.
Earlier this week on the Hill, Syracuse basketball (7-4) was in a tight contest with Colonial Athletic Association member Monmouth for a while before pulling away in an 86-71 triumph.
With its win over the Hawks, the Orange has consecutively bested Monmouth, Georgetown, Oakland and Notre Dame. Prior to that, the ‘Cuse had lost three in a row, so clearly, Syracuse basketball has some solid momentum lately.
Syracuse basketball versus Cornell odds
On Saturday morning, actionnetwork.com had installed the Orange as a 9.5-point betting favorite over the Big Red, with the over/under set at 154.5 points.
Syracuse basketball versus Cornell prediction
In their long series together, the Orange is 94-31 against the Big Red. Most recently, in late December of 2021, Syracuse basketball defeated Cornell at home, 80-68.
By extension, the Orange has beaten the Big Red 41 times in a row, with Cornell last knocking off the ‘Cuse in 1968.
Prior to 2022-23 commencing, the Big Red was projected to finish at No. 5 in the Ivy League, according to the conference’s preseason poll.
In the Orange’s victory against Monmouth this past Monday evening, freshman point guard Judah Mintz tallied a team-high 24 points. Senior center Jesse Edwards is on a tear, while sophomore forward Benny Williams and freshman forward Maliq Brown notched 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
The ‘Cuse defense had better be locked in this Saturday afternoon, as Cornell averages a whopping 85.1 points per game while connecting on 49.8 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from 3-point land.
The Big Red also shares the ball with precision, doling out 20.9 assists per encounter. Cornell and Syracuse basketball average basically the same number of rebounds per meeting, so the ‘Cuse will have to hold its own on the glass.
I think this is going to prove a really close game. Colgate, for one, came to the Dome a stanza ago having not beaten Syracuse basketball in forever, and now the Raiders have won two straight versus the Orange over the past two terms.
Moreover, the ‘Cuse is on a huge victory streak against Cornell, but the Big Red absolutely is a formidable opponent. I’m torn about which squad to pick here, but given that Syracuse basketball is at home and is on a roll of late, I’ll forecast the Orange to defeat Cornell.
Injuries, how to watch, live stream, next game
On the injury front, I’m not aware of any significant injuries to note as the Orange looks to win its fifth game in a row. Certainly, we’ll stay on top of this topic throughout the current term.
Syracuse basketball will host Cornell beginning at 3 pm on Saturday, Dec. 17, on the Hill. The ACC Network will provide television coverage.
For Syracuse basketball and Big Red fans who want to stream this game, you can check it out on fuboTV.
After the Orange battles Cornell, the ‘Cuse will have completed its 11-contest non-conference slate, and hopefully with a record of 7-4 after (hopefully) conquering the Big Red.
Syracuse basketball will then continue its present six-affair homestand by re-entering ACC competition for the remainder of the 2022-23 regular stanza.
On Tuesday, Dec. 20, starting at 9 pm, the Orange will suit up versus Pittsburgh at the Dome, with TV coverage on ESPNU.
