Syracuse basketball versus Monmouth odds, prediction and how to watch
By Neil Adler
Following its thumping of storied rival Georgetown at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon, Syracuse basketball has won three in a row, and the Orange will look to make it four-straight triumphs when the ‘Cuse hosts Colonial Athletic Association member Monmouth on Monday night.
It’s a quick turnaround for Syracuse basketball (6-4) as the Orange is set for a non-conference clash with the struggling Hawks (1-9). The ‘Cuse did a lot of positive things in its 83-64 destruction of the Hoyas, and I assume that Syracuse basketball players are feeling confident these days after recently enduring a three-contest setback streak.
All along, Orange head coach Jim Boeheim has said that it would take some time for his young roster to come together as a cohesive unit in the 2022-23 campaign, and I get it. Of its 12 scholarship players, eight ‘Cuse guys are underclassmen.
Now, the recent losses to St. John’s, Bryant and Illinois, along with a prior setback to Colgate, still sting, but Syracuse basketball has managed to rattle off consecutive wins at Notre Dame, at home against Oakland and then versus the Hoyas on the Hill.
Beginning with Monmouth, the Orange has four home dates in a row before the calendar year hits 2023, with the other opponents being Cornell, Pittsburgh and Boston College. If the ‘Cuse can get to 10-4 heading into 2023, that would prove huge for this young team.
Syracuse basketball versus Monmouth odds
At the time of this writing, actionnetwork.com had installed the Orange as a 20.5-point betting favorite over the Hawks, with the over/under set at 140.5 points.
Syracuse basketball versus Monmouth prediction
In their short series together, the Orange is 2-0 versus the Hawks. In their most recent affair, on the Hill, Syracuse basketball defeated Monmouth, 71-50, in November of 2016.
To date in 2022-23, the Hawks’ only victory is at Manhattan by seven points. Most recently, this past Saturday evening, Monmouth fell to Princeton on the road by a wide margin, 91-54.
Statistically speaking, the Hawks so far in this stanza leave a lot to be desired, and I mean no disrespect in saying that. As a team, Monmouth scores 61.5 points per game and allows a whopping 82.9 points per contest, according to ESPN data.
The Hawks do not shoot the ball well, connecting on just 39.6 percent from the field as a whole, 60.2 percent from the free-throw line, and 28.8 percent from beyond the arc. They also commit a ton of turnovers per affair, at 17.4.
Naturally, Syracuse basketball players can’t get complacent when they square off against Monmouth. But given how the Orange has fared lately, I don’t envision a tight outcome in this non-conference battle. I’ll go with the ‘Cuse to prevail.
Injuries, how to watch, live stream, next game
On the injury front, I’m not aware of any significant injuries to note as the Orange looks to win its fourth contest in a row. Certainly, we’ll stay on top of this topic throughout the current term.
The ‘Cuse will welcome Monmouth to town on Monday, Dec. 12. The tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm, with the ACC Network providing television coverage.

After the Orange hopefully takes care of business against Monmouth, Syracuse basketball will host long-time foe and Central New York neighbor Cornell from the Ivy League. That game will commence on Saturday, Dec. 17, starting at 3 pm from the Dome. The ACC Network will televise this encounter.
