Syracuse football trailing Notre Dame in national power ratings is total joke

To me and many other Syracuse football fans, the only national rankings that truly matter come at the end of the season.

Hopefully, following a bowl-game berth and subsequent victory, the Orange will find itself highly rated in the major top-25 polls and in national rankings from other sources.

But for now, certainly these power rankings from national media outlets and other pundits make for good fodder. In fact, we wrote last week how the ‘Cuse made the largest jump across the country in national power rankings from CBS Sports after Syracuse football dispatched of fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Louisville at home in week one with relative ease.

Following the Orange’s domination of UConn on the road this past Saturday night, by a final count of 48-14, the ‘Cuse moved to 2-0 so far in the young 2022 stanza.

A non-conference collision this Saturday afternoon on the Hill with Big Ten Conference member Purdue now awaits the Orange.

Let’s see where Syracuse football is situated in new power ratings.

Given its win over the Huskies, the ‘Cuse continues to climb up the national rankings in a newly published list from CBS Sports. That media outlet put Syracuse football at No. 51 overall, a rise of three spots.

The week before, after blowing out the Cardinals, the Orange jumped 35 placements, to No. 54 around the country.

In the latest ratings from CBS Sports, Syracuse football is just behind Fresno State (weird) and just ahead of Coastal Carolina (makes sense).

Part of the thing that we have to keep in mind here is that the ‘Cuse started off so low in these rankings, that even now as it’s winning games and moving on up, it still began really far down, according to CBS Sports.

Seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams are ahead of Syracuse football in the national power rankings from CBS Sports. They are the five league members that are presently in the major top-25 polls (Clemson, N.C. State, Miami, Wake Forest and Pittsburgh), along with North Carolina and Florida State.

Okay, fine, I can live with that. But I don’t get at all why Notre Dame is ranked higher than the Orange, per CBS Sports. I get that the Fighting Irish is a big football brand, and the ‘Cuse has been sub-par in recent years, save for 2018.

But the last time I checked, and let me know if I’m mistaken here, but in 2022 at this juncture, Syracuse football is 2-0 with a home victory versus Louisville and a road win against UConn.

Notre Dame is 0-2, with a loss at highly ranked Ohio State (understandable) and a home setback to Marshall (head-scratching).

Granted, the Fighting Irish did most recently tumble 32 spots to No. 40 nationally, according to CBS Sports. And I recognize that prior to the 2022 term commencing, Notre Dame was deemed a pre-season top-five or top-10 group.

However, at this juncture, Syracuse football is 2-0, and Notre Dame is 0-2. CBS Sports has the Orange at No. 51 nationally, and the Fighting Irish at No. 40 nationwide.

Huh? Say what? Someone, please, please explain this logic to me.
