Alrighty, Syracuse football fans, it’s time for the 2022 campaign to kick off! The Orange begins its quest this fall for a winning record and a bowl game when the ‘Cuse hosts fellow Atlantic Coast Conference team Louisville this Saturday night at the newly renamed JMA Wireless Dome.
There is a lot to like about the Orange’s 2022 roster, at least on paper. The team has new assistant coaches who, hopefully, will help improve the ‘Cuse passing attack. The Orange has an All-American running back in Sean Tucker, who is poised for another stellar term in 2022.
After multiple years where it has struggled, the chatter is that the ‘Cuse offensive line is going to be great in the upcoming stanza. On the other side of the field, the squad’s defensive line is young and inexperienced, and we’ll see how the DL fares against a potentially lethal Cardinals offense, led by stud quarterback Malik Cunningham.
The Orange certainly needs its special teams unit to perform at a higher level in 2022 than it did a year ago, when the ‘Cuse dropped three in a row to end the 2021 season at 5-7 overall.
Two defensive areas where the Orange should prove fabulous are at linebacker and in the team’s secondary. By the way, if you’d like to check out the ‘Cuse depth chart for week one, please visit this article from Emily Leiker of Syracuse.com.

Please check out WynnBET for the latest odds and betting information on the Orange vs. Louisville. At the time of this writing, the Cardinals were a four-point favorite, with the over/under set at 57.0 points.
I’m a little surprised that Louisville is the betting favorite, at least for now, by more than a field goal, seeing as the two teams’ records were similar in 2021, and the ‘Cuse is at home in this ACC clash.

Syracuse vs. Louisville prediction for week 1
Well, many national pundits and ACC media members are forecasting the Orange to finish at No. 7 (i.e., in last place) within the conference’s Atlantic division during the 2022 stanza. I get it. The ‘Cuse was 5-7 in 2021 and a dreadful 1-10 the term before that.
Plus, the Orange is projected to face a daunting schedule this fall. Still, I like this ‘Cuse roster a lot, and I’ve already gone on record in saying that I believe the team will sport a 7-5 mark in 2022 and earn a bowl-game berth.
Louisville, in 2021, was 6-6 before losing in a bowl battle to Air Force to wrap up last season at 6-7 overall. In the ACC’s pre-season media poll, while the Orange was predicted to finish in the Atlantic basement, the Cardinals are forecast to arrive at No. 4 in this division.
To me, Cunningham poses a lot of problems to the ‘Cuse defense. He’s a dual-threat quarterback who can hurt you through the air or on the ground. He has an ability to facilitate Louisville scoring points in droves, evidenced by the Cardinals stomping the Orange on their own turf last November, 41-3.
I think it’s critical for the ‘Cuse to commence 2022 in a positive way, and I have the Orange knocking off Louisville in a mild upset at the Dome.
