Last month, 2023 guard Trey Autry said in an interview that he’s planning to carve out his own path rather than play for Syracuse basketball, where his father, Adrian Autry, is the team’s associate head coach and could potentially become the Orange’s head coach when Jim Boeheim eventually retires.

Trey Autry, a 6-foot-3 point guard/shooting guard, has played at a high level on the AAU circuit in recent months for the Albany City Rocks in Nike’s EYBL league.

And he has continued with those types of strong performances as the EYBL league is holding its latest round of games in Kansas City, Mo., amid an NCAA live period.

It would prove totally understandable if Trey Autry prefers not to suit up on the Hill, and I respect that as a dad myself. He does have other suitors, as Autry has picked up more than a dozen scholarship offers to date, according to recruiting services.

But one expert made some interesting comments about Syracuse basketball and guard Trey Autry.

"As the latest live period has carried on, I came across an article from 247Sports national analyst Brandon Jenkins. He wrote in part that Autry “plays with great emotion and is an energy giver when his team needs a boost. Autry has been on record stating he is not a lock to commit to Syracuse where his father Adrian ‘Red’ Autry is an associate head coach. However, his competitiveness and shooting prowess could be hard for the Orange to pass up on.”"

Rewind to last month, and Trey Autry said to 247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein that eventually playing for the ‘Cuse is “not a consideration.”

"“He wants me to be able to pave my own path and do my own thing,” Autry said of his father. “I’m just looking for a program where I can come in right away and be a contributor.”"

A rising senior at the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, Autry is rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports, but he doesn’t appear to be nationally ranked by the primary recruiting services.

That being said, given his stellar play of late in grassroots basketball, I could absolutely envision him evolving into a four-star, top-100 player in the 2023 cycle.

His offer sheet includes Cincinnati, Fordham, George Washington, Maryland, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph’s, UC Santa Barbara, Florida International, Bryant, UMass, Towson, UMBC and Siena.

A lot of my fellow Orange fans discuss Trey Autry on social media and in chat rooms. There are definitely some ‘Cuse fans who would like to see him play for Syracuse basketball, and I’m in that camp.

However, other Orange fans are more skeptical, and they cite Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim playing for their dad, Jim Boeheim, in the most recent stanza, one in which the ‘Cuse was under .500.

I get all that. For me, I’m rooting for Trey Autry no matter where he ends up. I’ve read a couple of articles lately that speak to him being a humble young man who works his tail off in the gym.

To me, that kind of energy and character would be welcomed on the Hill, but I also respect that Autry may want to head elsewhere besides the Orange.
