Syracuse Basketball: 4-star priority point guard named player of year in Pa.
By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball 2024 priority recruiting target Robert Wright III, a fast-rising four-star point guard, put forth one of the best all-around sophomore seasons around the country.
The 6-foot-1 Wright, who plays both high-school and AAU basketball in Philadelphia, recently was named the Pennsylvania All-State Class 4A player of the year for his tremendous 2021-22 campaign, according to an article from Rich Flanagan, who writes for the Philadelphia Sports Digest and City of Basketball Love.
Wright, in 2021-22, played a pivotal role as Neumann-Goretti High School in Philadelphia went 23-4 overall and claimed the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (“PIAA”) 4A state title.
In his sophomore year, Wright tallied averages of 19.3 points, 4.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals a game, according to MaxPreps.
Per Flanagan’s story, Wright averaged a stellar 21.8 points per contest during post-season play for Neumann-Goretti High School in the most recent stanza.
All of those numbers are tremendous, also considering that Wright is just a sophomore, and he averaged 5.9 points per encounter as a freshman.
Syracuse basketball offered a scholarship to point guard Robert Wright III in March.
For his 2021-22 efforts at Neumann-Goretti High School, Wright recently landed an All-America honorable-mention nod in the sophomore recruiting cycle from MaxPreps.
More recently, during NCAA live periods last month on the grassroots basketball circuit, the Orange coaching staff was in attendance for at least one of Wright’s games. In AAU events, he competes for the Philadelphia-based Team Final in Nike’s EYBL league.
Looking ahead to the 2022-23 campaign, high-school hoops analyst and scout Samad Hines, among others, has projected that Neumann-Goretti High School is likely to be a nationally ranked team when the season commences.
As we noted in a recent piece, Syracuse basketball assistant coach Gerry McNamara lately has been recruiting Wright “very heavily,” according to an interview that Wright conducted with Rivals.com.
Although his recruiting process likely has a way to go, besides the Orange, other college squads that have offered Wright include Maryland, Miami, Wake Forest, Seton Hall, VCU, Wichita State, La Salle and Delaware State.
In mid-June, college coaches will be able to start making direct contact with 2024 players. Without question, Wright’s offer list is going to grow, and rather quickly.
That being said, at least for the time being, it does appear that Syracuse basketball is in a pretty good spot with this talented point guard from Philadelphia.
