Four-star wing Gavin Griffiths, who landed a Syracuse basketball offer in the fall of 2020, is one of the hottest prospects across the entire country in his class, both in terms of his national rankings and his growing scholarship-offer sheet.
Virtually all of the primary recruiting services have updated their 2023 national ratings of late, and from what I can tell, the 6-foot-7 Griffiths has made some major moves. The junior at the Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, Conn., could be potentially approaching five-star status as well.
Orange coaches offered Griffiths in October of 2020, and that represented his first offer from a high-major program. His offer list continues to expand and is around 20 scholarship offers at this juncture, as far as I can tell.
Per his Twitter page, media reports and recruiting services, Griffiths’ other offers include from Michigan, Pittsburgh, Creighton, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Providence, Xavier, Kansas State, Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Dayton, Rutgers, Bryant, Fairfield, Hofstra, UMass and Siena. Those who are reportedly showing interest are Tennessee and Memphis, among others.
Syracuse basketball got in early with four-star wing Gavin Griffiths.
Last August and September, we wrote a few columns detailing that Griffiths was possibly eyeing a visit to the Hill, and that the ‘Cuse was among the college squads recruiting him the hardest.
Honestly, these days, it’s more difficult to tell how much of a contender Syracuse basketball is for Griffiths. This past October, he made an official visit to Iowa, and he’s also taken unofficial visits to UConn, Providence and Rutgers.
According to several reports that I’ve come across of late, Griffiths may be looking at official visits to teams such as Baylor, Michigan, Providence and Creighton. I haven’t seen the Orange mentioned more recently as it pertains to a potential official visit with Griffiths.
That being said, in one recent article from On3 national analyst Jamie Shaw, he wrote, “Griffiths recruitment is heating up, but things are still early. Iowa, Creighton, Michigan, UConn, Syracuse, Providence are some he speaks about regularly.” So I wouldn’t count out the ‘Cuse just yet.
In another recent story from Shaw, Griffiths said in part that he hears “a lot from Providence, Rutgers, UConn, Creighton, Baylor, and Michigan probably the most.”
To date, I haven’t seen any official predictions from national analysts and recruiting insiders as to Griffiths’ collegiate destination, although the recruiting prediction machine via On3.com lists the top-four suitors, at present, as Connecticut, Iowa, Providence and Rutgers. I would expect Michigan to be a major player here, too.
According to Shaw, Griffiths averaged more than 25 points per game during the 2021-22 campaign for the Kingswood Oxford School, while connecting on better than 40 percent from beyond the arc.
In the latest 2023 national rankings, Griffiths is No. 15 at On3, No. 29 at Rivals.com, No. 32 at ESPN, No. 35 via the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, No. 36 via the On3 Consensus and No. 61 at 247Sports.
Additionally, most recruiting services deem Griffiths either a top-10 shooting guard or a top-10 small forward in his class, as well as the No. 1 prospect from Connecticut.
Griffiths told Shaw that he’s looking to make a commitment announcement in September or October. We’ll of course continue to follow his recruiting process.
