If the first commitment for Syracuse football in the 2023 recruiting cycle is any indication of how this class may ultimately shape up for the Orange, that’s an extremely positive development that hopefully has ‘Cuse fans excited about the team’s future.
Not too long ago, the Orange picked up a commitment from 2023 three-star, dual-threat quarterback LaNorris Sellers, he revealed on his Twitter page.
The 6-foot-2 Sellers, a junior at South Florence High School in Florence, S.C., had verbally committed to fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Virginia last summer, per recruiting services.
However, after the 2021 college football season ended, UVA head coach Bronco Mendenhall resigned. Additionally, Cavaliers’ offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck left Charlottesville, Va., to take on the same positions for the ‘Cuse.
Sellers, understandably, reopened his recruitment. He received a scholarship offer from Syracuse football coaches in mid-January and committed to the Orange earlier this month.
Syracuse football has secured a top-35 quarterback in LaNorris Sellers.
I recognize that the ‘Cuse finished up its 2021 term on a down note, losing three in a row, all by wide margins, to post a disappointing 5-7 overall mark.
However, some coaching changes, led by Anae and Beck coming to Central New York, have me jazzed. The squad’s 2022 recruiting class is solid, with some potential gems there.
And while I never pretend to be a recruiting analyst, Sellers’ commitment is a fabulous way for Syracuse football to get going in the 2023 cycle.
Sellers noted in a recent interview with SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister that he plans to help the Orange with the team’s recruiting efforts in 2023 now that he has pledged his services to the ‘Cuse. The new Syracuse football commit says he anticipates taking an official visit to the Orange in the near future.
According to a review of the primary recruiting services, Sellers is a consensus three-star prospect, and he is placed as four stars by Phenom Preps. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite, at the time of this writing, had him at No. 627 nationally in the 2023 class, along with No. 33 at his position and No. 6 in South Carolina.
The On3 Consensus Ratings placed Sellers at No. 644 overall, No. 36 at his position and No. 6 in South Carolina. However, the On3 recruiting service itself says that Sellers is No. 16 across the country at his position, as well as No. 3 in South Carolina. That’s awesome.
In his recruiting process, besides Syracuse football and UVA, Sellers had scholarship offers from other college teams such as Virginia Tech, Memphis, Washington State, Appalachian State and Georgia State.
I think Sellers will prove a tremendous pick-up for the Orange in kicking off the team’s 2023 recruiting class.
