Syracuse basketball played its best game of the season in crushing Florida State in the 2022 ACC Tournament’s second round on Wednesday afternoon, and now the No. 9 seed Orange will face the No. 1 seed Duke on Thursday afternoon in the event’s quarterfinal round.

Versus the No. 8 seed Seminoles, the ‘Cuse (16-16, 9-11) was totally magnificent on both ends of the floor, and in both halves of that encounter. Senior forward Cole Swider went off again, this time tallying 28 points after recently putting up 36 points at North Carolina.

Additionally, junior guard Symir Torrence and sophomore center Frank Anselem were terrific, as the Orange shot well from the field, limited its turnovers, destroyed FSU on the boards, and played quite well on the defensive end.

However, that outcome against Florida State is unfortunately overshadowed by ACC officials deciding to suspend ‘Cuse senior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim for the Duke contest because he punched an FSU player on Wednesday afternoon.

Boeheim apologized for the incident. What he did was clearly wrong, and several ESPN college basketball analysts weighed in on the matter. Personally, I thought the one-game suspension was a little harsh, but Boeheim put himself in a bad position by throwing a punch.

The Blue Devils (26-5, 16-4) are currently ranked No. 7 in the country, and they captured the conference’s regular-season crown. Duke is hoping to make a deep run in the 2022 ACC Tournament to cement itself as a No. 1 or a No. 2 seed in the upcoming March Madness.

Syracuse vs. Duke on Thursday

Throughout the 2021-22 campaign, the ‘Cuse has hung tough with many of its opponents, with the team losing a handful of games that it probably should have won. However, the Orange’s two regular-stanza contests with the Blue Devils do not fall into that department.

Duke absolutely shredded the ‘Cuse during their meetings in both Durham, N.C., as well as on the Hill. Let’s face it, the Blue Devils are in another league as compared to the Orange. With Buddy Buckets out, along with injured junior center Jesse Edwards and injured freshman forward Benny Williams, I can’t envision a scenario where the ‘Cuse tops Duke.

As such, I’m predicting a Blue Devils victory, with the Orange wrapping up a dreadful 2021-22 term with a losing overall record, its first under head coach Jim Boeheim.
