Syracuse basketball looks to increase its winning streak to five games when it heads to Virginia Tech on Saturday evening, although the Orange will be without the services of junior center Jesse Edwards for this Atlantic Coast Conference clash and for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign.

As a team spokesman said to us via e-mail on Thursday, Edwards suffered a left-wrist fracture in the Orange’s victory at Boston College earlier in the week. Per the spokesman, Edwards will be out for the rest of the 2021-22 stanza.

First and foremost, my heart breaks for Jesse. He’s having a wonderful junior term, and by all accounts, he’s a really nice, hard-working young man. And by extension, this is a massive development for the ‘Cuse as the squad seeks to re-enter the conversation for a possible bid to the Big Dance this spring.

Both the Orange (13-11, 7-6) and the Hokies (14-10, 6-7) are hovering around the middle of the current ACC standings. Each group needs to pile up some victories in the near future to make a run at an invite to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

A triumph at Virginia Tech would not only boost the ‘Cuse success streak to five contests, but it would also improve the Orange’s position, at least for now, as it pertains to the upcoming ACC Tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Syracuse at Virginia Tech on Saturday

Entering this ACC duel, the Hokies are a solid 8-3 on their own turf, while the ‘Cuse is 3-5 in true road encounters. That being said, the Orange recently has captured two wins away from the Carrier Dome, against N.C. State and Boston College.

Given how the ‘Cuse has played of late, I was going to pick the Orange in this league meeting. But with Edwards no longer available, and this game being contested on Virginia Tech’s court, I’m reluctantly predicting a victory by the Hokies over the ‘Cuse.
