Syracuse basketball will ring in the new year with an intriguing home date against Virginia at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange (7-5, 1-0) went 2-0 in its recent Ivy League tour to wrap up its non-conference schedule at 6-5. The ‘Cuse absolutely torched Brown and then, more recently, the Orange was fabulous shooting from inside the perimeter in a 12-point conquest of Cornell. Both wins were on the Hill.

So now the Orange begins Atlantic Coast Conference competition in earnest. The ‘Cuse already defeated Florida State on the road in ACC play last month, but the Orange’s game versus Virginia (7-5, 1-1) on Saturday night kicks off the bulk of the team’s ACC calendar.

As we noted in a column not too long ago, the ACC isn’t looking so hot these days (save for Duke). If the ‘Cuse can become more consistent in various key components, I believe that the Orange could make a run for a top-four spot in the league, which appears to be wide-open in 2021-22.

All-time, according to orangehoops.org, the ‘Cuse is 6-10 versus Virginia, with their most recent encounter together occurring this past spring in the ACC Tournament’s quarterfinal round. The Cavaliers hit a dagger 3-pointer right before the final buzzer sounded to come away with a three-point triumph.

Syracuse vs. Virginia Prediction Tonight

Virginia, in recent stanzas, has proven one of the best teams not only in the ACC, but across the country. The Cavaliers captured the 2019 national championship and annually contend for the conference’s crown.

That being said, UVA isn’t super impressive so far in the present term. The Cavaliers and the Orange have identical overall records, and each squad possesses some head-scratching losses. Its last time on the court, Virginia was dominated by Clemson on the Cavaliers’ own turf.

As is per the norm for head coach Tony Bennett and his UVA players, they are stingy on defense but often can struggle to score. If the ‘Cuse doesn’t settle for taking a ton of perimeter shots, and the Orange is solid on defense and on the glass, I think that the ‘Cuse has a real shot to prevail.

In fact, since I turn 44 today, the Orange has to win, right? All kidding aside, I feel like the ‘Cuse is on a little roll, and I project that the Orange will take care of business in Central New York.
