Syracuse basketball plays its second former Big East Conference rival this week when the Orange travels to Georgetown on Saturday, Dec. 11, for an enticing non-conference collision with the Hoyas.

The ‘Cuse (5-4, 1-0) played well on defense for the second-straight game, but the Orange offense sputtered in a 14-point setback to No. 6 Villanova this past Tuesday night in New York City. Between that result and a recent win at Florida State, the ‘Cuse has only allowed 60 points and 67 points in its past two affairs, which is encouraging.

Up next for the Orange is Georgetown (4-4), which is by far the most storied rival for the ‘Cuse in program history, at least in my humble opinion. The Hoyas snuck into the Big Dance earlier this year after a magical run in the Big East Conference Tournament.

So far in the 2021-22 stanza, Georgetown hasn’t looked overly impressive, although the Hoyas are 4-1 on their own turf. To date, Georgetown has beaten American University, Siena, Longwood and UMBC, with the Hoyas’ losses to Dartmouth, Saint Joseph’s, San Diego State and South Carolina.

All-time in their long series together, the Orange owns a 52-44 advantage versus the Hoyas. That includes last season’s battle, in which the ‘Cuse prevailed, 74-69, on the Hill.

Syracuse at Georgetown Prediction Today

The Orange had recently picked up solid conquests of Indiana and Florida State, and I give the ‘Cuse credit for hanging tough with highly rated Villanova for much of their bout earlier this week. However, the Orange has to get itself going in the rebounding department, or the ‘Cuse could face a long afternoon versus Georgetown.

While the Orange’s record to date in the current term isn’t anything special, neither is the Hoyas’ overall mark, and Georgetown has played a much softer schedule. The Hoyas, at the time of this writing, had a NET ranking of No. 205, which leaves a lot to be desired.

The ‘Cuse needs to regroup, focus on its perimeter defense and the glass, rejuvenate its offense a tad, and dispatch of Georgetown on the road. I went back and forth on this one, but I’m going to project an Orange win in our nation’s capital.
