Syracuse basketball has claimed two victories in a row by a combined five points, and now the Orange will face its toughest opponent to date in the 2021-22 campaign as the ‘Cuse and former Big East Conference rival Villanova will square off for a non-conference clash in New York City.
The Wildcats (6-2) are ranked inside the top 10 of both major polls, and many national pundits view them as the favorite to win the Big East crown and contend for a berth in next spring’s Final Four.
The Orange will go up against Villanova this Tuesday night as part of the 2021 Jimmy V Classic at the historic Madison Square Garden in the Big Apple. The ‘Cuse (5-3, 1-0) has regained some momentum after recently having lost three of four games, first to Colgate and then twice in the Bahamas.
But last week, the Orange first escaped Indiana, 112-110 in double overtime, in the 2021 ACC-Big Ten Challenge from the Carrier Dome. Then, over the weekend, the ‘Cuse overcame a double-digit deficit to stun Florida State in Tallahassee, 63-60.
Despite those thrilling victories, the Wildcats present an even greater obstacle, as they’re the highest-ranked group that the Orange will have faced at this juncture in 2021-22. This enticing meeting among long-time rivals also pits ‘Cuse senior forward Cole Swider versus his former team, as he transferred from Villanova to the Hill this past off-season.

Syracuse vs. Villanova Prediction Tonight
After a recent rough patch, the ‘Cuse absolutely has some strong confidence heading into this affair with the Wildcats. And while I think that the Orange can muster more points than it did against the Seminoles, I don’t envision the ‘Cuse outscoring Villanova, which has an arsenal of offensive weapons.
I’m hopeful that the Orange will keep things close in NYC, but I’ll go with the Wildcats in this one.
