Syracuse basketball started off its 2021-22 campaign on a positive note, and now the Orange will look to move to 2-0 in the early part of the season when it hosts Drexel on Sunday, Nov. 14, from the Carrier Dome.
In the first official game of the 2021-22 term for the ‘Cuse, Syracuse basketball easily dispatched of Patriot League member Lafayette, 97-63, this past Tuesday evening on the Hill. The Orange (1-0) shot extremely well from the field as a whole, and from beyond the arc, in crushing the Leopards.
A balanced scoring attack was led by junior point guard Joe Girard III, who paced the team in points and assists, and graduate student forward Jimmy Boeheim, who proved sensational in his ‘Cuse debut after transferring in from Cornell.
Syracuse basketball has some things to work on, as head coach Jim Boeheim alluded to after the triumph over Lafayette, but all in all, the Orange looked solid in its 2021-22 stanza opener.
Now the ‘Cuse turns its attention to Drexel in another non-conference clash. The Dragons, based in Philadelphia, are a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. A season ago, Drexel went 12-8 and made a wonderful run to its league’s post-season tournament crown.
As we noted in a column a couple of months ago, the Dragons reached the NCAA Tournament this past spring for the first instance in 25 years. They would earn a No. 16 seed and match up with No. 1 seed Illinois in the round of 64, where Drexel would fall by a count of 78-49.
All-time in their short series together, the ‘Cuse is 3-1 versus the Dragons, with the most recent affair an Orange conquest of Drexel in December of 2010 in Central New York.
In the Colonial Athletic Association’s pre-season poll ahead of the 2021-22 term, Drexel was picked to finish third in the league’s standings, behind Delaware and Northeastern. The team’s senior point guard, Camren Wynter, was named the conference’s pre-season Player of the Year.
The Dragons (1-0) kicked off 2021-22 with a 103-74 home win over Neumann University this past Tuesday evening.

Syracuse vs. Drexel Prediction Tonight
The Dragons certainly looked convincing in their season-opening game. And Drexel did make a somewhat surprising run toward landing a Big Dance bid in the most recent stanza, but I don’t foresee the Dragons giving the Orange too much trouble in Central New York.
I’ll go with the ‘Cuse in this contest, by a somewhat comfortable margin.
