Syracuse basketball remains in the running for an under-rated 2022 big man from Virginia, and I believe that the Orange should be considered one of the favorites to win out in this recruiting battle.

According to a tweet from 336 Edits, Maliq Brown has revealed his five schools still in contention, and they are the ‘Cuse, Georgetown, Penn State, and a pair of fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squads in Virginia Tech and N.C. State.

Naturally, it’s encouraging news that the 6-foot-9 power forward has included Syracuse basketball among his group of finalists. In a separate tweet from 336 Edits, Brown plans to announce his college decision this Saturday.

The three-star Brown is a senior at the Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va., and he is good friends with Orange 2022 commit Justin Taylor.

Taylor, a four-star wing, is from Charlottesville, Va., although he’s spending his senior year at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. I think that his friendship with Brown could prove beneficial to the ‘Cuse in trying to pick up the top-30 power forward.

Syracuse basketball does have tough competition for three-star Maliq Brown.

In February of this year, Orange coaches offered a scholarship to Brown, although things had appeared pretty quiet among the player and the team in recent months.

However, when word broke that he would take an official visit to Central New York, that seemed to indicate mutual interest. Per media reports, Brown’s trip to the Hill went quite well.

According to his Twitter page, Brown made an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech in early September. There have also been rumblings of a possible visit to Georgetown, but I haven’t seen anything official there.

As we’ve noted in past columns on Brown, college squads that have offered him include Virginia Tech, Georgetown, Penn State, St. John’s, Texas A&M, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Murray State, VCU and TCU.

Regardless of where his national rankings in the 2022 class may currently stand, Brown is a highly skilled big man, and he would seem to fit in nicely with the rest of the Orange’s 2022 cycle.

For now, besides Taylor, the ‘Cuse has a four-star point guard and a power forward/center who have verbally committed to this class. We’ll continue to monitor Brown’s recruitment, and I’m hoping that he selects Syracuse basketball in the near future.
