Syracuse football is riding a two-game losing streak after falling in heart-breaking fashion for the second-consecutive week. Now the Orange is set to do battle with perennial power Clemson (3-2) on Friday, Oct. 15, in a night-time Atlantic Coast Conference affair on the Hill.
The ‘Cuse went down on a last-second field goal at Florida State on October 2, and then Syracuse football followed that up with a three-point, overtime loss to then-No. 19 and undefeated Wake Forest (6-0) in Central New York this past Saturday afternoon.
The Orange (3-3) held a lead against the Demon Deacons for a decent portion of their conference contest, but the ‘Cuse couldn’t put Wake Forest and its potent offense away. Credit the Syracuse football offensive line, which was a bit banged up, for doing its job to enable the Orange rushing attack to compile more than 350 yards on the ground, along with three rushing scores.
I know a lot of Orange fans want to label this result versus the Demon Deacons as entirely on head coach Dino Babers and his staff, but I’m not buying that. There were some questionable decisions by the ‘Cuse coaches, and clock management was an issue yet again.
However, the ‘Cuse had its chances to seal the deal on the field. Punting wasn’t great. The team had a fumble. The Orange missed a field goal. The defense, while often stellar, gave up several long touchdown passes, including the game-winner in the extra session.
Syracuse football is a few plays away from potentially being 5-1, or at least 4-2, rather than 3-3. Such is life. The ‘Cuse has to put this latest setback in the rear-view mirror and regroup for its next meeting, with the Tigers.
In recent years, Clemson has proven one of the country’s elite squads in the sport, making the College Football Playoff on numerous occasions and capturing two national championships.
A season ago, Syracuse football fell on the road, 47-21, to the Tigers, which were ranked No. 1 nationwide at the time, although we all remember how the Orange shocked Clemson a few stanzas back.
To date in the 2021 campaign, the Tigers have lost to Georgia and N.C. State (in two overtimes), while crushing South Carolina State and sneaking by both Georgia Tech and Boston College. Clemson, unranked in the Associated Press top-25 poll and No. 25 in the Coaches poll, was off a week ago and should be well-rested when the Tigers collide with the ‘Cuse.

Syracuse vs. Clemson prediction for week 7
For two weeks in a row, the Orange hung tough in wildly entertaining ACC games, but the ‘Cuse couldn’t get it done at Florida State, and then Syracuse football came up just short at home against undefeated and nationally ranked Wake Forest.
It’s a frustrating juncture for the Orange and its fan base, and while Clemson isn’t the national juggernaut so far in 2021 that it has been in recent terms, the Tigers are coming off a bye week, and they have a talented roster.
The ‘Cuse has shocked Clemson in the past, so an upset here isn’t totally out of the question. However, Syracuse football seems to be, unfortunately, sliding back a bit in 2021, so I’m going to pick the Tigers to prevail over the Orange in Central New York.
