Syracuse basketball seems to be back in the recruiting fray for a dynamic and under-rated big man in the 2022 class.

According to an article from Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI, power forward Maliq Brown from Virginia is taking an official visit to the Hill this weekend.

The 6-foot-9 Brown is a senior at the Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va. He is good friends with Orange 2022 four-star commit Justin Taylor, as they have played together on the AAU circuit in the past.

Brown, a consensus three-star prospect who I believe will attain a fourth star this coming season, recently took an unofficial visit to fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia Tech, according to his Twitter page.

According to Brown’s Twitter account and recruiting services, his other offers include from teams such as the aforementioned Hokies, Georgetown, Penn State, St. John’s, Texas A&M, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Murray State, VCU and TCU.

Syracuse basketball is hosting 2022 power forward Maliq Brown.

As we’ve detailed, the ‘Cuse offered a scholarship to Brown in February of this year, although there hadn’t appeared to be much buzz between him and the team in recent months. By the way, he is a top-30 power forward in this class, per Rivals.com.

However, Brown traveling to Central New York is certainly an encouraging sign that there is mutual interest among this 2022 player and the program.

This development is an exciting and interesting wrinkle to the Orange’s 2022 recruiting class. Just a few days ago, power forward/center Peter Carey gave his verbal commitment to Syracuse basketball, joining Taylor, a stellar wing, and four-star point guard Quadir Copeland in the ‘Cuse 2022 cycle.

But there’s more. As far as we can tell, the Orange remains in the hunt for 2022 four-star wing Chris Bunch and Central New York native J.J. Starling, a 2022 four-star combo guard.

Both Bunch and Starling recently took second official visits to the ‘Cuse. Carey also made an official visit to the Hill lately as well, and then he committed to the Orange not long after that.

I’m not saying that Syracuse basketball is going to gain additional commitments from all three 2022 targets in Bunch, Starling and Brown. But it’s also not out of the realm of possibilities.

Despite the ‘Cuse previously seeing two top-flight 2022 commits reopen their recruiting processes back up, which left a sour taste in the mouths of many Orange fans, this class for Syracuse basketball has the potential to end up in the top-10 across the country.
