Syracuse basketball picked up a verbal commitment from a talented and under-rated 2022 big man a few days ago, and what helped seal the deal for Peter Carey was his recent official visit to the Hill, he said in an interview.

During that visit, Carey told SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister that he had an opportunity to get to know the Orange coaching staff and players better, and he also got to check out the ‘Cuse campus.

All in all, Carey said to McAllister that Syracuse University, and the Orange hoops program, are the right fit for him. And the ‘Cuse, in turn, has received a verbal pledge from an athletic and versatile big man whose game continues to develop.

The 7-foot Carey, who can suit up at both power forward and center, is a senior at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mount Hermon, Mass. He competes in AAU competitions for the West Hempstead, N.Y.-based New York Lightning Select.

New Syracuse basketball commit Peter Carey enjoyed his trip to Central New York.

According to McAllister’s piece, Carey said that on his official visit, his parents “just fell in love” with the ‘Cuse. “There wasn’t a single aspect about it that they didn’t like. So they were all for my decision to commit,” Carey said.

His ability to sit in on Syracuse basketball practices was important to get a feel for the Orange system. And Carey had a film review with head coach Jim Boeheim. Per Carey, Boeheim told him that, “I would be very successful in their system.”

Carey had many positive things to say about the entire ‘Cuse program in McAllister’s article. For me personally, the biggest takeaway I had was that Carey seemed to immediately forge a bond with other Orange players, which is highly encouraging.

"“The one word that comes to mind is brotherhood,” Carey told McAllister. “There’s no bad blood within the team. Everybody just loves each other. They took me in really quickly and I developed such a great relationship with each and every one of the guys on the team.”"

Ever since Syracuse basketball coaches offered Carey, I’ve been hopeful that he would commit to the ‘Cuse, whether he’s nationally ranked or not.

In securing Carey, the Orange beat out several other college teams vying for him, including Rutgers, St. Bonaventure, Iona, UMass, Bryant, Brown and Albany. He gives Syracuse basketball three prospects in its 2022 cycle to date.
