Syracuse Basketball: 4-star wing, one of hottest prospects, eyes fall visit
By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball has offered scholarships to a range of 2023 prospects, including multiple top-flight players who rank in the top-25 to the top-50 nationally in this recruiting cycle.
One of those targets is four-star wing Gavin Griffiths, who performed at a lights-out level during the grassroots basketball circuit over the summer. That, in turn, has led to his stock soaring, both in terms of offers received and his national ratings within the 2023 class.
The 6-foot-7 Griffiths is a junior at the Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, Conn., and he plays in AAU competitions for the Boston-based Expressions Elite Basketball.
In a recent interview with Rivals.com national analyst Jamie Shaw, Griffiths provided some updates on his recruitment, including trips to various college campuses that he’s potentially looking to map out in the near future.
Syracuse basketball may get a visit from an ultra-talented four-star wing.
Griffiths said in the Rivals.com interview that he has already visited Connecticut, and he’s scheduled an official visit to Iowa, too. He added that he “most likely will visit Rutgers, Syracuse and Maryland this fall as well.”
I really hope that Griffiths, a top-40 prospect in the 2023 cycle, ends up traveling to the ‘Cuse campus. He’s a versatile player who I believe would thrive in the Syracuse basketball system, given his height, length, shooting stroke and other admirable skills.
Plus, Griffiths told Shaw that he continues to work on his rebounding, ball-handling and defense. Now, as much as I like Griffiths’ overall game, it will be tough sledding for the Orange, as competition is fierce.
He has an offer list that is around 15, and growing. For the time being, Griffiths says that he hears the most from UConn, Iowa, Rutgers and Maryland.
According to recruiting services, some of Griffiths’ most recent offers are from teams like Providence, Xavier, Kansas State and Connecticut, with other prior offers from Iowa, Maryland, Dayton, Rutgers, Bryant, Fairfield, Hofstra, UMass and Siena.
I’ve said for a while now that I believe Griffiths could contend for five-star status in the 2023 class when all is said and done. Not too long ago, Rivals.com refreshed its national rankings for this cycle, and Griffiths made one of the largest gains, placing at No. 35 overall.
ESPN also updated its 2023 ratings lately, and this recruiting service put Griffiths at No. 52.
Syracuse basketball coaches offered him a bit earlier on than some of these other high-major programs, so maybe that’s a positive for the Orange in Griffiths’ recruitment.
Getting a visit from him would be huge for the ‘Cuse. We’ll of course continue to monitor whether that happens down the road.
