Syracuse Basketball: 6-foot-8 guard, recently offered, bolts into rankings
By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball has proven quite active with new scholarship offers doled out to, and interest shown in, a wide variety of high-school prospects within the 2023 class.
One of those recent offers, which came in mid-August, went to fast-rising Spencer Mahoney, a talented and under-rated player from New York City whose recruitment has arrived on a national stage.
The 6-foot-8 shooting guard has entered the national rankings for the 2023 cycle, according to at least one recruiting service, and his list of offers is growing.
I’m excited that the Orange coaching staff has gotten involved with Mahoney relatively early on in his recruiting process, although competition for his services is absolutely going to keep on intensifying.
In the upcoming campaign, Mahoney will be a junior at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and he runs on the AAU circuit with the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals, which is one of the premier programs in grassroots basketball.
Let’s see where Syracuse basketball 2023 target Spencer Mahoney is ranked.
Rivals.com recently updated its national ratings of the top-150 prospects in the 2023 class. Mahoney is new to these rankings, coming in as three stars and No. 122 overall.
Based on what I’ve read about him, Mahoney should continue to climb up the national ratings in 2023 down the road. He sure looks like a four-star, top-100 prospect to me.
According to recruiting Web sites, Mahoney’s Twitter page and media reports, he recently landed new offers from teams such as St. John’s, DePaul and Texas A&M. His other offers include from squads like Robert Morris, Harvard and Siena.
Additionally, Mahoney has garnered interest from Northwestern and West Virginia, among others, according to media reports.
Recruiting analysts say that Mahoney is an athletic, versatile player who can suit up at shooting guard and small forward. He shoots well from the perimeter, is a solid defender, uses his height and length to his advantage, and excels at getting to the rim, experts say.
When asked about his offer from Syracuse basketball coaches by Stockrisers.com founder Jake Weingarten in a recent interview, Mahoney said, “Cuse offer felt great, Coach [Allen] Griffin’s pitch was that my game would fit perfectly into their system and that it is close to home.”
