Syracuse football opens its 2021 home slate with a battle versus former Big East foe Rutgers.

Syracuse football, despite being a slight underdog, went on the road this past Saturday night and took down a solid Ohio team, 29-9, from Peden Stadium in Athens, Ohio.

Sophomore running back Sean Tucker was nothing short of fabulous, as he rushed for a career-high 181 yards and a touchdown. A beleaguered offensive line from last year looked pretty darn good in the 2021 season opener.

The Orange defense gave up nearly 350 yards of total offense to Ohio, which is a member of the Mid-American Conference. However, the ‘Cuse defense also made some timely stops, which resulted in the Bobcats only netting a couple of field goals for the entire contest.

Considering that Syracuse football only managed one win in the 2020 campaign, this 20-point victory on the road to commence 2021 is really encouraging to me.

The Orange (1-0) continues its non-conference slate this coming Saturday, Sept. 11, with an afternoon battle inside the Carrier Dome against former Big East Conference foe Rutgers. This past Saturday, the Scarlet Knights absolutely throttled Temple at home, 61-14.

Rutgers, now a member of the Big Ten Conference, will prove a tough test for the ‘Cuse.

Syracuse injury report vs. Rutgers for week 2

Orange senior fullback Chris Elmore did not play against Ohio, according to a Syracuse.com report, noting that Elmore did travel the team. That’s something to keep an eye on. Here’s another Syracuse.com report on Elmore. For comprehensive news in the injury department throughout the week, I’d suggest taking a look at Syracuse.com.

Syracuse vs. Rutgers prediction for week 2

In all candidness, I’m struggling with this pick. I was quite excited about the bulk of the Orange’s performance in its season-opening conquest of a good Ohio squad on the road. The running game is looking strong. The OL line is, too.

The defense needs to clean some things up, but freshman defensive back Duce Chestnut is a star in the making. I like a lot of the guys within the linebackers unit, as well as the secondary. Some ‘Cuse fans on social media were concerned about the lack of a huge output by redshirt junior quarterback Tommy DeVito.

He was efficient with his passes, in my opinion, but he just didn’t throw for a lot of yards. Frankly, versus Ohio, he didn’t need to, but that could prove a different story against Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights looked money in their 2021 stanza opener.

In the end, I think this will be a closely fought encounter. With tens of thousands of ‘Cuse fans hopefully cheering on Syracuse football in the team’s home debut, I’m gonna do a homer pick and say that the Orange prevails over Rutgers by fewer than seven points.
