8. Matt Roe

I omitted Roe from my previous ranking back in 2018 and won’t make that mistake again. I’ll admit my mistake went I see it – I paid too much attention to three-pointers made and not enough to the efficiency behind it.

I’ll also take this time to say players ranked 4 through 8 could have been anywhere on this list. My decision was to go with Roe at 8.

Roe spent three seasons on The Hill and finished his Syracuse basketball career first all-time in three-point field goals. A whopping 43.32% from downtown still stands as the best mark for any player who attempted at least 200 threes.

Roe would transfer to Maryland for his final season of college basketball, but that doesn’t matter. He’s still recognized as one of the best catch-and-shoot players in Orange history.

A lot of Roe’s decision to transfer came about due to playing time and usage. He exploded in College Park for 17.8 points per game, up from 11.0 points during his junior year at SU.

However, he never channeled his sharpshooting abilities at Maryland quite as he did with Syracuse basketball. Roe was lights out his sophomore and junior seasons, shooting it at 40.7% and then 47.4% in consecutive years.

Roe was a part of the 1987 Final Four team but wasn’t used in the latter half of the season. However, during Syracuse basketball’s 1989 Elite Eight run, Roe was called up often, hitting 10-of-22 three-pointers attempted throughout the four games.

Younger Syracuse basketball fans may have never heard of Matt Roe, but as far as a pure shooter goes, the Orange have had few better.
