Around the time that 2022 five-star point guard Dior Johnson committed to Syracuse basketball in February of 2020, there appeared some buzz that the Orange proved in a strong position with 2022 four-star combo guard Chance Westry.
The ‘Cuse, last February, even received a couple of Crystal Ball predictions as it pertains to the 6-foot-5 Westry, who is a junior at the Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Calif., after transferring there from Trinity High School in Camp Hill, Pa.
Former Syracuse basketball target Roddy Gayle Jr., a 2022 four-star shooting guard who is headed to Ohio State, revealed in an interview a couple of months ago that he, Johnson and Westry thought hard about suiting up together in Central New York.
With Gayle having selected the Buckeyes and Johnson having re-opened his recruiting process, a lot of Orange fans feel that the ‘Cuse doesn’t have much of a shot at landing Westry, a top-55 prospect nationwide in the 2022 cycle.
That could certainly prove true. Perhaps Syracuse basketball has moved on from Westry, or he is no longer seriously considering the Orange. Then again, maybe there remains mutual interest. We’ll have to see how this plays out.
Syracuse basketball got in relatively early with 2022 four-star guard Chance Westry.
Westry, to no one’s surprise, boasts a ton of impressive high-major offers, and some recruiting analysts have said for a while now that there doesn’t seem to be any front-runners for Westry at this juncture.
The Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to him in July of 2019, and Westry has previously visited the ‘Cuse campus on an unofficial visit. He’s also spoken highly of the Syracuse basketball program, and the Orange coaches, in past articles that I’ve read about Westry.
He recently tweeted out, “They letting official visits soon.”
I hope that’s the case. Back in November, a press release from the NCAA said that the Division I Council had “extended the recruiting dead period for all Division I sports through April 15.”
I’m sure that Westry is looking forward to making some official visits, as that could help bring some clarity to his recruiting process. When official visits are allowed, I hope that he considers Syracuse basketball for one. But I’m rooting for Westry wherever he ends up.
