Syracuse basketball freshmen Kadary Richmond and Woody Newton are faring really well so far this season.

With two Syracuse basketball starters having missed several games of late, that certainly could have played a role in Orange freshmen Kadary Richmond and Woody Newton seeing increased playing time at this point in the young 2020-21 campaign.

Undeniably, both Richmond and Newton are making the most of their opportunities on the court, and they’re each putting forth stellar beginnings to their careers on the Hill.

Junior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim had to sit out a couple of contests due to Covid-19 protocols, but he returned this past Saturday afternoon when the ‘Cuse (4-1) destroyed Boston College on the road.

Senior center Bourama Sidibe is unfortunately injured, and head coach Jim Boeheim has said it could prove a bit of time before Sidibe is back.

That could, in turn, enable Newton, a power forward, to remain a constant in the Syracuse basketball rotation. Richmond, meanwhile, is the primary back-up guard to Buddy Boeheim and sophomore point guard Joe Girard III.

All in all, these two freshmen are competing at a high level, much to the delight and excitement of Orange fanatics, myself included. I hope this trend continues.

Syracuse basketball newbies Kadary Richmond and Woody Newton are shining.

Per ESPN statistics, on the year to date, Newton is logging 15.0 minutes, 8.3 points and 4.5 rebounds a game, while connecting on 54.5 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from beyond the arc. That’s solid.

For Richmond, he is posting 26.4 minutes, 8.4 points, 4.4 boards and 4.6 assists per affair, against just 2.2 turnovers. Richmond is hitting on 56.0 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line.

In the virtual press conference following the Eagles rout, Boeheim noted that Richmond is a “really good” player who brings tremendous effort and energy no matter what his role is in a particular encounter. Boeheim praised Richmond’s defense and instincts, among other things.

Jim Boeheim, speaking about Newton, said in essence that he likes everything that this freshman has done at this juncture in 2020-21. Boeheim added that Newton is an active, smart guy who moves well, and he simply goes out and makes plays. We agree, Coach B.
