Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim to coach 2-3 years, hopefully longer
By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim is sticking around at least a few more years.
Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim is embarking on his 45th season at the helm of the Orange in 2020-21, which is a mind-boggling achievement if you ask me.
And Boeheim says that he isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon, and that’s fine by me. Speaking with reporters on a Zoom call a few days ago, Boeheim touched on a variety of topics, including recruiting efforts as it pertains to the ‘Cuse 2022 class, a cycle that presently possesses zero prospects after five-star point guard Dior Johnson de-committed from the Orange.
Boeheim, when asked about Johnson during this call, didn’t mention the elite high-school point guard by name, because he’s not allowed to, since Johnson is an unsigned prospect.
But Boeheim did note that Syracuse basketball coaches are pursuing some “really good” players in this class. Boeheim also said that he’s made it clear to 2022 prospects that he’s not done coaching until his son, Orange junior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim, has wrapped up his collegiate basketball career.
Jim Boeheim is leading Syracuse basketball for a minimum of two to three additional years.
At present, the younger Boeheim is on track to exhaust his eligibility in two more stanzas, however, the NCAA is letting student-athletes have an extra season of competition due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
That, in turn, means Boeheim could suit up for three more campaigns, which would put him in the 2022-23 term as his final season. That, by the way, is the year in which class of 2022 high-school players would enter their freshmen stints.
Jim Boeheim said on the Zoom call that his son could play three more seasons, but nothing is for certain at this juncture. But it would absolutely bode well for 2022 prospects who are seriously considering the ‘Cuse and would like to suit up for at least one stanza under the legendary, Hall of Fame head coach.
Yes, Boeheim is in his mid-70s, but he doesn’t seem like he’s slowing down even just a tad. I could see him coaching Syracuse basketball even beyond after Buddy is done on the Hill.
Despite Johnson, one of the top players in the 2022 cycle, moving on, Orange coaches are in the mix for a handful of other guys who are ranked in the top 50 to top 100 across the country.
Syracuse basketball could prove in store for some special seasons in the near future, and 2022 is an important class for the ‘Cuse. Boeheim has acknowledged that. And, hopefully, he’s around for enough time to guide 2022 prospects on a deep run or two in March Madness.
