It looks like Syracuse basketball could end up hosting those pesky Hoyas after the calendar year flips.
For many reasons, including the novel coronavirus pandemic, escalating racial tensions, natural disasters and so much more, 2020 has proven awful, but perhaps there’s a way that Syracuse basketball could start off next year on a high note.
CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, citing a source, is reporting that the Orange and Georgetown are “likely” to play their contest versus one another within the 2020-21 term in January.
Rothstein notes that the bout between the former Big East Conference rivals is expected to occur on a Saturday in that month. He adds that the Hoyas and Syracuse basketball both have league clashes – the Big East for Georgetown, and the Atlantic Coast Conference for the ‘Cuse – slated to transpire in December.
Nothing would make me happier than for the Orange to welcome Georgetown to the newly renovated Carrier Dome in early January, right after the new year arrives, and for Syracuse basketball to then absolutely crush its long-time nemesis.
Syracuse basketball, per CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, may suit up with Georgetown in January of 2021 in Central New York.
Of course, it won’t prove easy for the ‘Cuse, as the Hoyas have done well against the Orange in recent stanzas. Since Syracuse basketball jumped the Big East ship for the ACC in 2013-14, these two adversaries have squared off on five occasions.
In those non-conference duels, Georgetown is 3-2 versus the Orange, including the Hoyas’ 89-79 defeat of the ‘Cuse in Washington, D.C., in mid-December of 2019.
Should Syracuse basketball manage to best Georgetown in the next go-around on the Hill, the Orange could even up its recent non-conference series with the Hoyas at 3-3.
Head coach Jim Boeheim and his team could certainly encounter some tough emotions when they take the court in the coming months against Georgetown and its head coach, Patrick Ewing.
That’s because John Thompson Jr., the legendary former head coach of the Hoyas, sadly passed away more than a month ago. Thompson, a national champion in 1984, was not well-received by some Syracuse basketball fanatics, but he sure possessed the respect of Orange players, coaches and a bevy of ‘Cuse fans.
